About the role
The Engineering Challenge at Viam involves building software for machines in real-world environments, dealing with unreliable networks, and integrating with hardware, sensors, and real-time data. The Fleet Management team builds the control plane for Viam's machines, including cloud systems and web applications for configuring devices, deploying software, and managing fleets at scale.
Responsibilities
- Design and build backend services that manage machine configuration and fleet state
- Develop full-stack features across APIs, databases, and web applications used to operate machines
- Build systems that deploy configuration and software updates across fleets of machines
- Evolve authentication and permissions systems used across the Viam platform
- Build infrastructure for storing and retrieving logs uploaded from deployed machines
- Improve systems that track machine usage and power Viam's billing platform
- Shape architecture decisions that help the fleet platform scale as deployments grow
Requirements
- Experience building production systems in distributed or cloud environments
- Experience designing APIs and backend services that operate reliably at scale
- Experience debugging complex distributed systems or production services
- Experience working across teams to improve shared platform capabilities, developer tooling, or user-facing systems
- Experience making sound technical tradeoffs as systems and architecture evolve
Qualifications
- Experience with robotics or IoT is not required
Skills
- Proficiency in Golang backend services
- Experience with modern web applications (Svelte / Typescript)
- Knowledge of MongoDB
- Experience with gRPC APIs
