Senior/Staff Engineer, Eng Tech Specialist III - Substation Conceptual
Job Summary
Dominion Energy seeks motivated engineers to contribute to shaping the future of the electric grid. This position involves conceptual design, project coordination, and support for Dominion’s Electric Transmission and Distribution Substations projects.
Primary Responsibilities
- Conceptual design of Electrical Utility Substations for new construction and upgrades.
- Capture input from a multi-disciplined project team and define the project scope.
- Create and/or modify Substation physical design drawings, including conceptual one-line diagrams and general arrangements.
- Create project cost estimates using material and labor costing databases for the Physical portion of projects.
- Develop Conceptual Engineering Scope/Estimate Packages for projects and support the Project Managers through the project approval process.
- Facilitate the transition of conceptual design to detail engineering and implementation team.
- Provide technical expertise and/or team leadership as needed.
- Assist less experienced engineers and technicians in conceptual engineering, detail engineering, and the field.
- Participate in site visits to support the construction group and/or asset owners.
- Represent the company at state and county commission applications/hearings and community open houses.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Senior Engineer: Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience (Substation applications) or demonstrated equivalent.
- Staff Engineer: Minimum of 8 years of relevant engineering experience (Substation applications) or demonstrated equivalent.
- Engineering Technical Specialist III: Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (Substation applications) and demonstrated competencies in an applicable discipline.
- Firm understanding of substation components and their functions.
- Firm understanding of physical design principles and practices for major substation equipment, transmission lines, and distribution feeder configurations.
- Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation is a preferred.
- Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
- Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
- Planning, organizational, and project management skills.
- Self-motivator who can work cooperatively in a team environment.
- Comfortable independently seeking knowledge and information.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments.
- Effective decision-making skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Education Requirements
- For placement in the Engineer job series: Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math, or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or hold or have previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
- For the Engineering Technical Specialist job series: 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering, or other technical related discipline; or 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree.

Expected Hiring Base Salary Range
- Engineering Technical Specialist III: $90,900 - $118,100
- Senior Engineer: $90,900 - $118,100
- Staff Engineer: $99,800 - $129,600
