About the Role

Dominion's Power Generation Engineering group seeks a Senior or Staff Engineer with balance of plant power station equipment experience and field support background. This role involves highly complex work requiring extensive knowledge and significant experience, including planning and conducting complex projects, devising innovative engineering solutions, and providing technical expertise and leadership. The position serves as a resource to management on complex engineering problems and issues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide corporate support to Dominion’s Power Generation (non-nuclear) fleet with a strong mechanical engineering background in Balance of Plant (BOP) systems.
  • Use SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software for equipment design, modeling, layout development, and technical drawing creation and review.
  • Design, troubleshoot, operate, and maintain material handling systems, including:
    • Belt conveyors, drag conveyors, screw conveyors
    • Transfer points, chutes and hoppers
    • Crushers and feeders
    • Bulk material storage and handling equipment
  • Apply knowledge of air-cooled condenser (ACC) systems, including:
    • Fan and blade design/performance
    • Mechanical drive systems
    • Thermal performance optimization
    • Vibration and reliability troubleshooting
  • Analyze and resolve detailed mechanical issues involving:
    • Gearboxes, motors and drives
    • Couplings, bearings, rotating equipment
    • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
    • Mechanized material handling equipment
  • Understand heat exchanger systems, including:
    • Evaporators, surface condensers
    • Shell-and-tube heat exchangers
    • Plate and frame heat exchangers
  • Apply knowledge of cooling tower design, operation, and thermal performance, including:
    • Mechanical draft cooling towers
    • Structural and mechanical components
    • Fan systems, water distribution systems
    • Pipe design, thermal performance assessments
    • Capacity and efficiency optimization, HVAC
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and develop engineering solutions to improve equipment reliability and performance.
  • Familiarity with alignment techniques, lubrication programs, and predictive maintenance technologies.
  • Review vendor designs, specifications, calculations, and equipment proposals.
  • Support capital projects from conceptual design through commissioning, including equipment procurement, construction support, and startup activities.
  • Support station mechanical and performance issues through resolution, collaborating with vendors, suppliers, and outside engineering resources.
  • Review and develop maintenance strategies for equipment and systems.
  • Provide station support during force and planned outages.

Requirements

  • Senior Engineer: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience, preferably in technical engineering support for maintenance and operation of balance of plant and mechanical systems.
  • Staff Engineer: 8+ years of relevant engineering experience, preferably in technical engineering support for maintenance and operation of balance of plant and mechanical systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of engineering theories, principles, and practices.
  • Full knowledge of business/financial and contractual matters.
  • Recognized as an expert by other engineers and management in the assigned area.
  • Strong planning and project management skills.
  • Strong technical and organizational leadership skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
  • In-depth knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using software programs (e.g., Matlab, Excel).
  • Proven decision-making skills and ability to think analytically to solve complex problems.
  • Ability to interpret and apply codes, regulations, and practices.
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Competency with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.
  • Strong knowledge of PI ProcessBook and the PI System for retrieving, validating, and analyzing historical plant data.
  • Strong knowledge of heat transfer principles and thermal system performance.
  • Strong knowledge of heat exchanger design, operation, and performance analysis.
  • Knowledge of Flow Simulation and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry standards, including ASME, OSHA, ACCUG, CEMA, CTI, and relevant power generation design practices.

Qualifications

For placement in the Engineer job series, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program.
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside the U.S. accredited through the Washington Accord.
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math, or Engineering Technology, and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited.
  • Hold or have previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

Required degree: Bachelor’s in Engineering (equivalency not accepted).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fundamental Engineering (FE) certification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Pay

Expected hiring base salary range:

  • Senior Engineer: $90,900 - $118,100
  • Staff Engineer: $102,300 - $132,800

The actual salary offered may vary based on qualifications, skills, experience, and work location.
