Senior Staff Cloud Engineer
About the role
Credit Acceptance is seeking an experienced Senior Staff Cloud Engineer to drive the strategy, design, development, and implementation of large-scale cloud projects. This role is pivotal in modernizing and consolidating IT infrastructure, automating workloads, and pursuing next-generation innovation. The ideal candidate will have expertise in cloud-based technologies, a firm grasp of emerging platforms, and the ability to customize solutions to enhance security and efficiency. From day one, you will impact the day-to-day efficiency of our IT infrastructure and contribute to our overall growth.
This position is primarily remote, with occasional planned travel to an assigned Southfield, Michigan office location. Team members may also choose to work from the Southfield office if preferred.
Responsibilities
- Provide thought leadership and build cloud solutions that deliver high-impact business value and customer delight.
- Lead the design and implementation of scalable, reliable, and maintainable cloud solutions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business partners, Product Managers, and designers, to define product requirements and direction.
- Drive technical innovation and improvements in cloud systems and practices at the organizational level.
- Define, develop, and drive cloud engineering best practices.
- Become an expert in business process domains to align technologies with business outcomes.
- Develop cross-disciplinary knowledge and an understanding of market context to drive organization-level solutions.
- Work with engineering leadership to develop and execute the company’s technical and business strategy.
- Conduct impact analysis to proactively identify the effects of changes across multiple applications/systems.
- Perform technical due diligence and architectural assessments of third-party technologies and solutions.
- Experiment, test ideas, validate assumptions, and recommend solutions.
- Document standards, best practices, and engineering artifacts for maintainability and clarity.
- Debug critical production issues and execute effective solutions.
- Anticipate customer needs and industry shifts to improve design and engineering practices.
- Participate in talent selection and mentor team members.
- Develop standard architectural practices and lead solutions across partner engineering groups.
- Define and document best practices and strategies for cloud deployments and maintenance.
- Ensure application performance, uptime, and scale while maintaining high standards of quality and design.
- Conduct routine environment audits of cloud accounts for compliance with established standards and policies.
- Maintain a comprehensive cloud library of all supporting documentation.
- Demonstrate and encourage a culture of automation, orchestration, and efficiency.
Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of experience designing scalable Cloud/Hybrid environments with a strong background in AWS and Azure.
- Experience developing and managing Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, GitHub, etc.
- Experience in a lead role overseeing technical direction for multiple Cloud/Platform/Development/DevOps/SRE teams.
- Extensive experience building and driving adoption of cloud engineering best practices.
- Experience driving impact on mission-critical enterprise-class applications with organization-wide impact.
- Hands-on experience with LLM integration patterns and at least one LLM gateway or proxy product (LiteLLM, Portkey, AWS Bedrock Gateway, or equivalent), including model routing, rate limiting, and token usage attribution in a multi-tenant cloud environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a hybrid Cloud/Data Center environment supporting multi-tier and microservice applications.
- Experience with SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS deployments in the cloud.
- Experience developing and maintaining performance metrics and graphs.
- Experience with other clouds like Oracle and Google.
- Experience with backup and data protection technologies.
- Experience with patching tools and virtualization environments.
- Experience with observability and alerting tools like PagerDuty.
- Ability to use Excel or similar tools to derive value from various data sources.
- Experience with monitoring/trending software such as CloudWatch, ELK, Splunk, etc.
- Expert knowledge of DevOps processes.
- Experience with agentic orchestration frameworks such as LangGraph or LangChain, and familiarity with the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for building or securing agent tool interfaces.
- Experience with policy-as-code frameworks (OPA, Cedar, or equivalent) in production cloud environments, particularly for access control and automated compliance enforcement.

- Expert knowledge of cloud best practices with experience building complex software engineering products.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, cloud computing, and microservices architectures.
- Demonstrated ability to coach business partners, cross-functional team members, and mentor senior-level staff.
- Proven track record driving continuous improvements with cloud technology.
- Proven ability to drive automation and build self-service capabilities for Software Engineers.
- Development of automation scripts in various automation, orchestration, scripting, or programming languages.
- Ability to right-size cloud infrastructure with cost and performance in mind.

Pay
A competitive base salary range from $161,000 – $237,000. This position is eligible for an annual variable bonus of cash and equity, between 15-30%, based on individual performance. Final compensation within the range is influenced by role-specific skills, depth of experience, industry background, relevant education, and certifications. Candidates in major metropolitan areas such as San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, and San Diego may be eligible for a premium on top of the posted range.
