Senior Staff Accountant
About the role
The Senior Staff Accountant is a highly accountable and results-oriented professional responsible for supporting the organization's finance department through the execution of complex accounting activities. This role is responsible for maintaining the accuracy and integrity of financial records, supporting the month-end close process, preparing financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Objectives
- Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations
- Ensure monthly bank and credit card reconciliations are completed timely to support month-end close deadlines
- Maintain accurate financial records by posting, verifying, and appropriately allocating transactions within accounting systems
- Prepare journal entries and supporting documentation for the month end close process
- Maintain complete digital files and work papers that support financial records and audit readiness
- Update financial data in a timely manner and ensure accuracy through ongoing account reconciliations
- Analyze account fluctuations and investigate variances to ensure accurate financial reporting
- Proactively identify discrepancies, recommend solutions, and communicate risks or delays that may impact financial reporting deadlines
- Prepare financial reporting packages, KPI reporting, and supporting schedules for leadership
- Support the annual audit process by preparing requested schedules and documentation
- Recommend and implement process improvements that strengthen internal controls and improve accounting efficiency
Competencies
- Advanced proficiency in performing complex bank, balance sheet, and general ledger reconciliations with a high degree of accuracy
- Comprehensive understanding of month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, and account analyses
- Demonstrated capability to prepare accurate financial reporting and supporting schedules while maintaining the integrity of financial records
- Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), including researching accounting issues and recommending appropriate accounting treatment
- Experience managing fixed asset accounting and preparing depreciation schedules
- Analytical mindset with the ability to identify discrepancies, investigate variances, and resolve accounting issues proactively
- Proven ability to work effectively across multiple legal entities while maintaining accuracy and compliance
- Highly organized with the ability to prioritize competing deadlines and manage multiple accounting activities simultaneously
- Exceptional attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy, accountability, and continuous process improvement
Education & Experience
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience
- Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Desktop, QuickBooks Online, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace
- Experience managing full-cycle month-end close activities
- Experience supporting annual financial audits (preferred)
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
