Senior Speechwriter
About the role
The Senior Speechwriter crafts external and internal messages for the Bank president and other senior executives that reflect the voice, tone, and strategic goals of the Bank and its leaders. The role involves researching, drafting, editing, and refining a broad spectrum of communications, including formal monetary policy speeches, talking points, and various types of executive communications.
Responsibilities
- Leads all phases of the speech development process, including coordinating the review process, completing necessary research, and ensuring that speeches are prepared in a timely, appropriate, and confidential manner.
- Drafts and refines compelling, structurally sound remarks that advance principal positioning and messaging goals.
- Works with a cross-functional team to craft and improve messaging for a range of topics including economic conditions and monetary policy.
- Convenes, leads, and manages the writing process, developing a detailed delivery timeline, assigning accountabilities with specific due dates, and building agendas and briefing documents.
- Understands the context, audience, and tone appropriate for each piece of communications, producing polished drafts that require minimal revision.
- Leads a post-engagement review for continuous improvement, evaluating message penetration, delivery effectiveness, and audience response.
- Synthesizes observations into clear recommendations that are shared with the president and carried forward into subsequent speeches.
- Advises on the tone and tenor of public remarks and recommends delivery adjustments that strengthen communication impact.
- Drafts a range of shorter-form executive communications that require an authoritative and accessible voice, including welcoming remarks, town hall scripts, strategy presentations, and internal leadership messages.
- Researches, drafts, and refines articles for internal and external Bank publications from the president in coordination with subject matter experts and communications team, ensuring a precise command of language and a consistent, audience-centered voice.
- Contributes to the development and maintenance of Bank-wide talking points and public outreach resources, ensuring that all speakers carry forth the president's messaging.
- Stays continuously informed about Federal Reserve monetary policy, District economic conditions, and regulatory developments through briefings and engagement with internal and external knowledge sources.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Public Policy, Economics, or a closely related field and a minimum of ten years of related work experience.
- Master’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Public Policy, Economics, or a closely related field and a minimum of seven years of related work experience.
- Professional writing experience in an executive communications, speechwriting, policy communications, or public affairs role.
- Demonstrated experience writing formal speeches, policy remarks, or executive-level communications for senior organizational leaders.
- Proficiency with standard office productivity and document management tools.
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex economic or policy content into clear, compelling, and audience-appropriate language for diverse audiences.
- Strong project management skills with demonstrated experience leading cross-functional teams and managing multiple concurrent deliverables under deadline pressure.

Pay
The expected starting salary range for the Senior Speechwriter is between $137,000 and $171,300 annually. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and market data.
