Senior Specialist, EHS
About the Role
Responsible for creating, coordinating, and implementing environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs to meet internal requirements and ensure compliance with government regulations. This position maintains knowledge of current industry and regulatory trends, providing subject matter expertise to the plant. Develops long-range plans and processes to continuously improve the plant's EHS program. This role is 100% onsite at our Salt Lake City manufacturing facility.
Responsibilities
- Reviews Corporate and regulatory safety, fire safety, environmental, industrial hygiene, and hazardous materials programs and implements them at the site level.
- Reviews and audits site programs for compliance.
- Completes EHS evaluations for new projects and equipment modifications.
- Investigates incidents and complaints related to safety, health, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, etc., and makes recommendations for improvements.
- Develops and conducts safety training as needed (e.g., New Employee Management, LOTO, Confined Space, Electrical, Machine Guarding).
- Manages the Industrial Hygiene (IH) monitoring plan and conducts periodic monitoring (noise, air, and Radio Frequency).
- Performs follow-up and ensures closure of safety and health recommendations from various audits, site inspections, and hazard reports.
- Manages various EHS programs, such as Contractor, Fire System, Ergonomic Programs, and/or Radiation Safety Programs as assigned.
- Creates and performs various safety and environmental inspections as needed.
- Completes OSHA logs, environmental, and hazardous material regulatory reporting.
- Develops and conducts Safety Leadership Training.
- Conducts periodic audits of Site Programs.
- Provides support for various site safety committees.
- May supervise Safety team members.
- Follows up on inspection and hazard reporting program findings.
- Serves as the EHS Manager’s backup, including support of staff activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
Requirements
- Knowledge of EHS management systems.
- Understanding of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, TCEQ, and DOT/IATA regulations.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills.
- Excellent speaking skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of employees and present/facilitate training.
- Ability to multi-task, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
- Project management skills, including organizing tasks to successfully complete projects within selected time frames.
- Strong computer literacy and application proficiency.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- A bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), Engineering, EHS Management, or a related discipline.
- Six years of experience in both safety and environmental roles in a manufacturing environment.
- In lieu of an applicable educational degree, ten or more relevant years of EHS field experience will be considered.
Preferred Skills
- CIH, ASP, CSP, CHMM, or environmental certification.
- Experience leading successful teams.
- Experience at an OSHA-certified Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) site.
Work Environment
- Travel required less than 5% of the time.
- Exposure to noise, chemicals, and confined spaces.
- Ability to work various shifts and weekends.
- Office and plant exposure, including outdoor work.
- Lifting requirements of at least 25 lbs. and infrequent lifting of 50 lbs.
- Ability to walk up and down stairs and stand for 1 to 2 hours at a time.
- Ability to climb ladders up to 20 feet in height.
- Confined Space Entry and Emergency Response training-related stresses.
- Ability to wear a respirator.
