About the role
Software Engineering Managers at Google have the technical expertise to lead major projects and provide technical leadership, as well as the ability to manage a team of engineers. They optimize their own code while ensuring their team members can do the same. The role involves managing project goals, contributing to product strategy, and helping develop the team.
Responsibilities
- Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals. Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.
- Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization's goals. Meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching.
- Develop the long-term technical goal and roadmap within, and often beyond, the scope of your teams. Evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs.
- Oversee systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and review product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems.
- Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of experience with software development in Java or C++.
- 7 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.
- 5 years of experience in a technical leadership role.
- 5 years of experience in a people management or team leadership role.
Preferred qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- 5 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization.
- Experience leading through technical and organizational complexity.
- Experience with Java, C++, or both.
- A passion for technology, collaboration, and solving challenging problems.
Pay
$262,000 - $365,000 (USD) + 25% bonus target + equity + benefits
