Senior Software Engineer (Business Applications)

Our agile teams leverage cloud technologies, DevSecOps, and AI to modernize existing platforms and create novel solutions by integrating commercial products, custom-developed, and low-code solutions.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, implement, maintain, operate, and support information applications relevant to the administration of PNNL’s business systems.
- Maintain and operate existing business information systems while partnering with clients to define, build, and deliver innovative software solutions for complex business and scientific problems.
- Work collaboratively as part of an agile development team to deliver transformational technology solutions and incremental features.
- Propose software designs and architectural approaches for new features and applications.
- Collaborate effectively on diverse teams (e.g., platform managers, project managers, domain experts, users, and software engineering teams) to design and deploy innovative business information systems across the enterprise.
- Provide individual contribution to software development projects across a broad range of technologies and subject areas.
- Utilize software engineering best practices throughout the entire software development lifecycle and recommend or lead changes in development, maintenance, and system standards.
- Enhance personal technical and professional skills through active mentoring and training.
- Assimilate knowledge quickly in a variety of domains.
- Continuously scan the software development landscape for new technologies and methods to incorporate into the enterprise.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD and 3 years of Software Engineering experience, or
- MS/MA and 5 years of Software Engineering experience, or
- BS/BA and 7 years of Software Engineering experience, or
- AA and 16 years of Software Engineering experience in designing, architecting, programming, deploying, and automating software solutions in support of scientific research or consumer digital product development, or
- HS/GED and 18 years of Software Engineering experience in designing, architecting, programming, deploying, and automating software solutions in support of scientific research or consumer digital product development.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with JavaScript frameworks such as React, Backbone, or Angular.
- Experience developing APIs and RESTful Web Services.
- Experience integrating with commercial products using APIs and Web Services.
- Exceptional communication skills with both technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Experience with iterative development practices such as Agile or Scrum.
- Experience with JavaScript, ASP.NET, C#, HTML, CSS, SQL, JSON.
- Knowledge and experience in the development of complex software systems using development methodologies and best practices.
- Knowledge and experience in applying software design patterns.
- Knowledge and experience in applying layered architecture patterns.
- Experience with unit and integration testing libraries like React Testing Library and Cypress.
- Knowledge of secure coding practices (cross-site scripting and SQL injection).
- Experience with Continuous Integration and Delivery tools and best practices (building pipeline definitions, automation, deployments).
- Knowledge of Azure Cloud services (ASE, APIM, KeyVault, AppInsights).
- Ability to deliver results with the highest level of professionalism and integrity.
This position involves access to sensitive systems and information; U.S. Citizenship is required. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is subject to the Department of Energy Unclassified Foreign Visits & Assignments Program site, information, technologies, and equipment access requirements.
