About the Role

Your work shapes the world at Caterpillar Inc. As part of a global team, you'll contribute to creating stronger, more sustainable communities through innovation and problem-solving. This role focuses on building the intelligence layer that connects machines, data, and people to make jobsites safer, more productive, and more sustainable. You'll work with a unique data foundation—over 1.6 million connected assets generating real-world data daily—to develop AI models, edge computing architectures, and scalable software systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, and deploy backend RESTful API services using Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture.
  • Provide day-to-day technical leadership on complex engineering problems and guide implementation decisions across features and services.
  • Lead development of new functionality on cross-functional Agile teams and partner with product and architecture stakeholders to deliver business value.
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, design discussions, pairing, and feedback to improve technical quality and team effectiveness.
  • Drive engineering excellence through strong practices in architecture, testing, CI/CD, observability, and operational readiness.
  • Apply AI-assisted development tools and software engineering agents to accelerate design, implementation, testing, refactoring, and documentation; define clear task context and verification criteria.
  • Guide full-stack implementation tradeoffs across API, service, and UI boundaries while remaining primarily focused on backend microservice design and delivery.
  • Contribute to application and interface design, technical documentation, and scalable integration patterns across the platform.
  • Identify and resolve root causes for complex production and development issues while improving system resilience over time.

Requirements

  • Software Development: Knowledge of software development tools and activities; ability to produce software products or systems in line with product requirements.
  • Software Product Design/Architecture: Knowledge of software product design; ability to convert market requirements into software product design and technical approaches.
  • Software Integration Engineering: Knowledge of software integration processes and functions; ability to design, develop, and maintain interfaces and linkage to alternative platforms and software packages.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to analyze situations and reach productive decisions.
  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools, and techniques; ability to transmit, receive, and interpret ideas, information, and needs.

Qualifications

  • Strong backend engineering capability with Java 17+ and Spring Boot to design and deliver RESTful APIs using microservices principles.
  • Proven ability to build secure, scalable platform services in a cloud environment such as AWS or Azure.
  • Experience deploying backend services in cloud-native environments.
  • Knowledge of AI-assisted and agentic software development workflows.
  • Ability to review, validate, test, and refine AI-generated code and pull requests for correctness, maintainability, performance, security, and alignment with engineering standards.
  • Knowledge of responsible AI usage and secure coding practices in AI-assisted development.

Nice to Have

  • Experience building production AI agents using Python.
  • Experience with agent orchestration frameworks such as LangChain or LangGraph.
  • Experience integrating LLMs with external tools, APIs, databases, and retrieval systems.
  • Experience designing evals, guardrails, and monitoring for agent reliability.
  • Multi-agent workflow design and memory/context management.
  • Prompt optimization, latency reduction, and cost control.
  • MLOps or model deployment experience.
