Senior Software Engineer

About the role

The North America Payouts team ensures every Wise transfer ends with a promise: money reaches the recipient quickly, safely, and without surprises. This role leads meaningful problems from discovery through production—making payouts more instant, improving recipient experience, expanding payment reach, and strengthening reliability and compliance at scale. Success directly influences cross-border volume, payout speed, transfer quality, cost, and risk.

Responsibilities

• Apply a strong product mindset, connecting engineering decisions to customer outcomes, payout volume, speed, quality, cost, and risk.
• Work with a self-starting and collaborative approach, confidently operating independently, taking initiative, and bringing the right people together to solve problems.
• Own impactful projects end-to-end—from understanding the problem and shaping the solution through delivery, rollout, measurement, and long-term operation.
• Build and maintain services using Java or Kotlin, Spring Boot, microservices, relational databases, and well-designed APIs; experience with Kafka, event-driven systems, or cloud infrastructure is valuable.
• Exercise sound distributed-systems judgment across asynchronous processing, idempotency, data consistency, retries, reconciliation, security, scalability, and failure recovery.
• Commit to maintainable, well-tested software, predictable delivery, effective observability, and thoughtful operational ownership.
• Communicate clearly and adaptably, translating complex technical concepts for different audiences and working across teams to reach practical, well-balanced solutions.
• Create positive impact beyond individual delivery through mentoring, actionable feedback, technical reviews, reusable knowledge, and reducing single-person dependencies.

Qualifications

• Strong experience with Java or Kotlin, Spring Boot, microservices, relational databases, and well-designed APIs.
• Experience with Kafka, event-driven systems, or cloud infrastructure is a plus.
