About the role

A Senior Software Engineer with exceptional data and software engineering skills, and a passion for building data-centric applications will join a team of software developers, data scientists, and product owners to support and expand KBI’s Digital Transformation vision. The role focuses on developing innovative, cutting-edge solutions to enhance the quality and speed of drug development using software and data solutions, particularly in cloud-based custom-built platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, enhance, and review software solutions and data analysis tools to enable scientific insight, leveraging existing open-source and proprietary packages.
  • Apply industry best practices and design patterns to translate fast-moving product requirements into state-of-the-art designs, architecture recommendations, and engineering tasks that align with business goals and KBI’s Digital Transformation.
  • Collaborate closely with subject-matter experts (SMEs) to build data-driven tools and applications.
  • Shape engineering culture by introducing new ideas, tools, and best practices to improve quality and time-to-market for digital products.
  • Interface with scientists, engineers, software developers, and management to contribute to the team’s vision and mission.
  • Own projects end-to-end: from design and backlog maintenance to development, production, and support.
  • Provide code reviews and training to internal and external software developers, including consulting teams.
  • Stay current with software best practices and emerging technologies, particularly open-source and cloud-based data solutions.
  • Promote a digital mindset and improve data and software awareness across KBI as the company expands its use of digital solutions.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with substantial Computer Science training, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of software development experience, preferably with a scientific and/or data focus.
  • Strong proficiency in 2+ modern programming languages, preferably Python and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • 5+ years of experience delivering products using technologies such as:
    • Python, Node.js, and frameworks like React, Next.js, Flask, Django, or Streamlit.
    • AWS services (e.g., Redshift, Redshift Spectrum, RDS).
    • Data technologies (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, Airbyte, DBT).
    • Testing frameworks (e.g., pytest, Playwright).
    • Orchestration tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, Airflow).
  • Strong understanding of computer and software architecture in cloud environments.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and a commitment to building simple, maintainable solutions for complex engineering challenges.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with end-users, development teams, and stakeholders.
  • Customer-focused mindset with the emotional intelligence to gather and define requirements.
  • Passion for technology and continuous learning to adopt new tools and practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in a pharma or other regulated environment.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum), ideally in a regulated setting.
  • API development experience, including REST, FastAPI, AWS Glue, or similar frameworks.
