About the role
The Senior Software Engineer, AI for the Planet role is expected to work from our offices in Seattle. On-site requirements vary based on position and team.
Responsibilities
- Work on Skylight, an AI platform for detecting illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in real time.
- Collaborate with the ML research team and Product & Partnerships teams to build products that support environmental and high-impact users.
- Develop and deploy multi-tenant agents for Skylight's next generation of AI products.
- Integrate machine learning models into production systems, including deployment, monitoring, scaling real-time inference, and iteration.
- Build user-facing applications where AI outputs need to be communicated clearly to non-technical users.
- Ship high-quality code quickly and learn from mistakes.
- Iterate small, focusing on genuine solutions to big problems faced by environmental organizations.
- Work closely with users to understand their needs and continuously improve the product.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience in industry.
- Experience working as a generalist software engineer across multiple parts of the stack and product lifecycle.
- Experience working with modern AI tooling and integrating machine learning models into production systems.
- Ownership over production systems, including taking on-call rotations, troubleshooting production issues, and developing real, actionable insight when needed.
- Ability to write clear technical plans, give and receive feedback well, prioritize tasks, and guide stakeholders through the details.
Qualifications
- Strong foundations in web applications, data pipelines, distributed systems, and modern cloud tooling.
- Experience at small or growth-stage companies, where you own outcomes end to end without heavy process scaffolding.
- Opinionated about software engineering practice, including coding patterns, breaking down work, code review, testing, and build systems.
- A demonstrated track record of technical depth and self-directed learning, such as open-source contributions, technical writing, conference talks, and sustained side projects.
- Open to occasional international travel to meet directly with the people using what we build.

Pay
Base salary range: $126,000 - $189,000. In addition, we have generous bonus plans to provide a competitive compensation package.
