Senior Scientist, Oceans Science
The program overview highlights that Science and Innovation (S&I) at EDF supports all scientists and fosters relationships with external scientists. The S&I team focuses on innovative solutions to environmental challenges, including methane science, air quality, hydrogen science, carbon dioxide removal, fisheries and ocean sustainability, water availability, climate smart agriculture, social science, and solar radiation modification.
About the role
The Senior Scientist will lead the PCS Research Initiative, aiming to understand the effectiveness and ecological impacts of phytoplankton carbon solutions. This role involves developing and overseeing research projects, managing relationships with external partners, and communicating findings to policymakers.
Responsibilities
- Manage design of public requests for proposals, external research projects, and research portfolio
- Develop and maintain relationships with prospective and funded grantees and partner institutions
- Conduct independent research, lead and participate in the analysis and writing of papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals
- Analyze, interpret, and communicate scientific data to state, federal, and international policymakers and other external partners
- Organize meetings with grantees and other partners and stakeholders
- Attend and represent EDF at external meetings and interact with the scientific community
- Mentor more junior scientists, fellows, and interns, as appropriate
Qualifications
- A PhD in ocean science, biological oceanography, biogeochemistry, marine ecology, or a related field with at least 5 years of relevant experience
- Proven experience leading comprehensive science-focused projects and managing a portfolio of research projects
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to synthesize, interpret, and communicate scientific data in an advocacy setting
- Experience in rigorous analysis and supporting highly visible work
- Ability to lead and mentor others
- Experience in supporting fundraising initiatives
- Willingness and ability for occasional domestic and international travel
