About the Role

Conducts innovative scientific investigation by developing theories and devising scientific methods and procedures to apply scientific principles, theories, and research in projects related to the mission of UTMB. Committed to the discovery of new biomedical and health services knowledge leading to increasingly effective and accessible health care. Has full technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating overall project assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies and assesses feasibility and significance of research projects.
  • Establishes research objectives and methodology, and designs procedures requiring a highly developed technical skill.
  • Conducts research projects and performs analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Defines problems and possible solutions as dictated by the research project.
  • Compiles, writes, and effectively communicates project results to the principal investigator.
  • Manages all aspects of the lab, including staffing, staff development, safety training, and all applicable policies, laws, and regulations.
  • May submit training grants as Principal Investigator (PI), provided they have a faculty mentor.
  • Publishes and presents research and works independently as First/Senior author on publications.
  • Ensures proper training of Classified Research staff and Post Doctoral Fellows.
  • Designs, develops, and maintains equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.
  • May submit equipment, renovation, or other facility/core enhancement grants as the PI.
  • Reviews scientific literature.
  • Identifies appropriate internal controls for the department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ph.D., M.D., D.O., or D.V.M in a related field and six years of related experience with Peer Review Publications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Biocontainment experience (2+ years BSL3 or BSL4).
  • 2+ years of experience with regulated studies.

  • Specialized knowledge or expertise in a particular subject area which may allow for project-specific lead responsibilities.
