Job Summary
A Senior Sales Engineer is responsible for providing technical oversight and guidance to sales team members and other sales engineers. This role involves leading pre-contract engineering efforts for the development of technically accurate concepts of high-risk and high-complexity load handling activities. Additionally, this role provides commercial input to sales leads to ensure projects are set up for financial and operational success.
Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed engineering analyses, develop lift plans, and select appropriate equipment and rigging configurations.
- Collaborate closely with sales leads, site teams, and clients to provide technical expertise, address on-site challenges, ensure regulatory compliance, and properly identify and mitigate operational risks.
- Mentor junior engineers, contribute to continuous improvement efforts, and drive innovative solutions that enhance operational efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness in crane and rigging projects.
Requirements
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in the crane, rigging, or heavy lifting industry, with demonstrated project engineering experience.
- Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, OSHA 10.
- Technical Proficiency: Must possess the ability to perform detailed load calculations and structural analyses to ensure safe lifting operations. Requires an in-depth understanding of various cranes, hoists, rigging equipment, and their specific applications. Proficiency with CAD, 3D modeling software, and industry-specific tools such as AutoCAD, Inventor, Lift Planner, or similar programs is essential. Strong knowledge of relevant standards and regulations, including OSHA, AISC, ASME, ANSI, and others specific to lifting and rigging, is necessary to maintain compliance and uphold industry best practices.
- Sales Strategy: Understanding of sales principles used throughout the organization – including value-based selling, strategic account focus, and job costing optimization.
- Software Proficiency: Proficiency with engineering software (i.e. RISA-3D, Ansys, Mathcad, MS Excel), as well as ERP systems, scheduling software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Problem-Solving and Analytical Expertise: Skilled in diagnosing and resolving technical and logistical issues in crane and rigging operations, with strong analytical abilities for engineering calculations, lift plan optimization, and meticulous attention to detail in documentation and safety protocols.
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills for engaging with clients, site managers, and team members; adept at cross-functional collaboration with departments like project management and operations; proficient in preparing and presenting technical concepts and project information to current or prospective clients.
- Project Management Skills: Strong leadership skills with experience in managing project budgets, schedules, and risks, while mentoring a team of engineers and technicians to ensure timely and cost-effective project completion.
- Physical Requirements: Willingness to travel to project sites as needed. Ability to work in a variety of environments, including outdoor and construction sites, and conduct on-site inspections, which may involve standing, walking, crawling, and climbing ladders or scaffolding.
- Fitness for Duty: Must pass a drug test, be fit for duty, and undergo a background check.

Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field from an ABET accredited 4-year university.
