Senior Roadway Drainage Engineer (Hydrology & Hydraulics)
About the role
The AECOM Water Business Line is seeking a Senior Roadway Drainage Engineer (Hydrology & Hydraulics ) to join the Phoenix, AZ office. This role focuses on roadway and highway drainage design, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling for transportation corridors, and development of storm drain, culvert, and cross-drainage systems in support of municipal and DOT infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
- Lead hydrologic and hydraulic analysis and design for roadway drainage systems, including storm drain networks, culverts, inlets, gutter flow, spread analysis, and hydraulic grade line (HGL) evaluations along transportation corridors
- Direct preparation and delivery of construction packages, including design drawings, specifications, cost estimates, alternatives analyses, technical memoranda, and design reports
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering projects with a focus on stormwater management systems
- Perform and oversee hydrologic and hydraulic analyses specifically for roadway and highway drainage, including culvert sizing, storm drain system design, cross-drainage structures, and floodplain impacts at roadway crossings
- Lead conceptual and final design of roadway drainage infrastructure including culverts, storm drain systems, detention facilities, channels, and erosion control measures integrated with roadway profiles and grading plans
- Prepare roadway drainage plans, profiles, and details in coordination with roadway design teams using Civil 3D, ensuring compliance with DOT, county, and municipal drainage criteria
- Ensure designs incorporate erosion control measures, geosynthetics, and surface and subsurface drainage systems
- Provide technical oversight, independent reviews, and approval of engineering analyses and design deliverables
- Manage and coordinate multi-disciplinary project teams, including subcontractors, typically consisting of five or more team members
- Mentor and provide technical direction to junior engineers and designers
- Support client coordination, present design solutions, and contribute to development of project proposals and business growth initiatives
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline with 8 years of relevant professional experience
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Arizona or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire
- Experience with DOT or municipal roadway drainage standards (e.g., ADOT, county public works) including inlet spacing, gutter flow, spread calculations, and storm drain hydraulic design
- Demonstrated expertise in stormwater evaluation and design, including 1D/2D hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
- Proficiency with industry-standard modeling software (e.g., Open Roads Design (ORD), HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SRH-2D)
- Experience leading design tasks on complex water resources or design-build projects
- Strong understanding of stormwater permitting, floodplain management, and regulatory coordination
- Experience developing grading, drainage, and roadway plans in coordination with CAD designers (AutoCAD Civil 3D preferred)
- Proven ability to manage scope, budget, and schedule for complex engineering tasks
- Proven ability to prepare technical reports, calculation packages, and construction documentation
- Demonstrated technical review and quality control oversight experience
- Strong analytical skills with sound application of civil engineering design principles
- Effective communicator with the ability to lead teams and collaborate with other team members
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field of study with 10 years of relevant professional experience
