About the role

The Senior Research Scientist in the Mechanistic Biology team at Elanco will lead target identification and validation for animal diseases to enhance the drug discovery pipeline. This non-lab role focuses on guiding cross-functional teams through early-stage drug discovery using advanced techniques and AI/ML-driven platforms. The position emphasizes accelerating the discovery cycle through high-throughput screening approaches for both small molecules and biologics. The ideal candidate will contribute to innovative strategies that improve animal health and foster collaboration across various scientific disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the identification and prioritization of novel targets using in vitro/in vivo experiments, literature reviews, bioinformatics, functional genomics, and AI/ML.
  • Design and deploy high-throughput and multi-modal screening strategies to identify novel chemical and biological starting points.
  • Guide cross-functional teams through early drug discovery from initial concept through target validation.
  • Develop strategies to de-risk targets and enhance commercial viability by integrating Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls considerations.
  • Manage external CRO partnerships and biotech collaborations, providing scientific expertise to support discovery campaigns.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Cell/Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, or a related field with several years of postdoctoral training.
  • Professional experience in industry research and early-stage biotech/drug discovery, including CRO management.
  • Expertise in target identification and validation, including biological assay development for small/large molecules.
  • Expertise in New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) such as organoids/iPSCs and CRISPR/Cas9 screening.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation with annual bonus and equity eligibility.
  • Retirement plans, including a U.S. 401(k).
  • Comprehensive health coverage: medical, dental, vision, company-paid life and disability, and pet insurance.
