University of Vermont · Burlington, VT · 3 wk ago
$80k–$113k/yrFull-time

About the role

This Research Computing Systems Engineer position provides expert support for the Vermont Advanced Computing Center’s (VACC) research computing systems and helps build and maintain state‑of‑the‑art high performance computing (HPC) solutions for researchers. The VACC operates four research clusters, including multi‑thousand‑core “big compute” resources, GPU‑focused resources, and a massive in‑memory database cluster. The role supports VACC computing and storage hardware infrastructure, as well as research computing software such as Slurm, OpenOnDemand and related technologies. The engineer works with VACC IT staff to install, maintain, and support research software and tools used by the UVM research community, responds to researcher requests for software installation and troubleshooting, assesses faculty needs to adjust VACC compute resources, and supports academic use of VACC resources by working with faculty to expand HPC into the classroom. Scripting is essential for cluster administration and enabling users to leverage the VACC cluster. Because changes affect hundreds of users and millions of dollars of research, systematic attention to detail, careful planning, and sound judgment are critical.
