Senior Research Associate - Cell Analytical Development

Vertex Cell and Genetic Therapies (VCGT) is seeking a contract contributor to expand testing capabilities and support routine analytical activities within our cell and gene analytical technologies team.

About the role

This 6-month, lab-based contract position will collaborate across cross-functional teams in Analytical and Process Development to support the development of Cell and Gene Therapy processes and products. The ideal candidate has a strong background in cell culture, experience with automated platforms, and a thorough understanding of SOPs and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out routine cell culture, both manually and automated, of primary cells, stem cells, and other mammalian cell lines to support analytical testing for Vertex’s preclinical, clinical, and next-generation cell therapy programs.
  • Provide analytical testing support for cell-based assays such as cell count and viability assays, high-throughput fluorescence cell-based assays, and flow cytometry assays using automation tools like liquid handlers, flow cytometers, and high-content microscopes.
  • Assist analytical development teams with setting up, monitoring, and completing daily automated runs and integrated systems.
  • Continuously monitor the health of automation systems and evaluate their efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Perform sample testing using techniques such as Cell Culture, Flow Cytometry, ELISA, and PCR.
  • Report on project progress and present data effectively at internal group or project team meetings.
  • Coordinate shipment handling and reagents from internal and external sources.
  • Track inventory for samples and reagents across multiple projects.
  • Participate in data management activities to ensure timely completion of deliverables.
  • Support Tuesday to Saturday schedules with occasional off-schedule days, second shift/late evening coverage, and flexibility to travel between sites within a 2.0-mile distance.
  • Maintain excellent written documentation of experiments (ELN) and knowledge-sharing systems (MS Teams and SharePoint).
  • Follow and understand SOPs, review protocols or reports, and interpret data accurately.
  • Assist with lab organization and compliance with lab safety protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate in Cell & Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, or a related discipline.
  • BS with 2+ years of experience or MS with 0-2 years of experience.
  • Excellent pipetting skills and strong knowledge of aseptic cell culture technique.
  • Experience culturing multiple cell types, including stem cells, primary cells, and cell lines.
  • Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture aseptic technique.
  • Experience with or understanding of robotic liquid handlers (e.g., Hamilton) and their operating software (e.g., Fluent Gx, VENUS).
  • Ability to follow SOPs and carry out cell culture assays.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of standard lab safety regulations and ability to work in a GLP-like laboratory environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritize, and handle multiple projects within required timelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry experience in the cell and gene therapy space.
  • Experience working with ELN/LIMS systems.
  • Experience working with pluripotent/hematopoietic stem cells.
  • Knowledge of lab automation tools such as Hamilton and Tecan.

Working Environment

  • Onsite position at our Boston FP site with occasional travel to the Boston LC site.
  • Able to work upright and stationary for typical working hours.
  • Ability to use and learn standard office equipment and technology with proficiency.

Pay

$38/hr - $45/hr

Schedule

  • Support Tuesday to Saturday with occasional off-schedule days.
  • Second shift/late evening coverage as required.

Contract length: 6 months with the chance to extend.
