About the role

The Unit Supervisor/Senior Reactor Operator position at Talen Energy's Susquehanna Steam Electric Station involves assisting Shift Managers, directing unit controls, participating in operator training, reviewing procedures, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Shift Managers in their duties and take on direct responsibilities in their absence.
  • Direct manipulation of unit controls and monitor plant operation.
  • Respond to system or unit abnormalities, diagnose causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Authorize maintenance activities and changes in equipment and system operational status.
  • Direct Plant Control Operators during emergency situations according to emergency operating procedures.
  • Supervise and coordinate fuel handling activities.
  • Provide leadership by conveying organizational values and influencing team members.
  • Earn and maintain a Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) license for the Susquehanna Nuclear Generating Station.

Requirements

  • Total education and power plant experience must meet one of the following criteria:
  • A minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent and 1 year or more as an Active Reactor Operator or Senior Reactor Operator at a commercial power reactor facility of the same vendor and vintage.
  • 1.5 years or more as an Active Reactor Operator or senior Reactor Operator at a comparable (BWR/PWR) facility or at a noncomparable commercial power reactor facility.
  • 2 years or more in a position equivalent to a reactor operator position at a military reactor (qualified to manipulate or direct the manipulation of control rods such as a reactor operator, engineering officer of the watch, propulsion plant watch officer, engineering watch supervisor, or propulsion plant watch supervisor).
  • BS degree or equivalent in engineering, engineering technology, or related sciences, or a professional engineering license, with total responsible nuclear power plant experience greater than the following:
    • 18 months for a comparable facility
    • 27 months for a noncomparable facility
    • 36 months for a nontraditional degree
  • Satisfactory physical and mental condition as evidenced by successfully passing company-provided examinations in accordance with the code of Federal Regulations 10 CFR55.11 (a)(1) and (a)(2).
  • Satisfactory completion of entry selection test.

Qualifications

  • Hold a senior operator's license for the unit(s) assigned.
  • Meet the requirements of ANSI/ANS 3.1 - 2014 for Senior Reactor Operator and REG Guide 1.8.

Skills

  • Ability to monitor plant operation and operator performance.
  • Knowledge of system and unit abnormalities and ability to diagnose and recommend corrective actions.
  • Experience in authorizing maintenance activities and changes in equipment and system operational status.
  • Leadership skills to provide direction and supervision to Plant Control Operators and Nuclear Plant Operators.
  • Ability to handle emergencies and coordinate fuel handling activities.
  • Knowledge of regulatory guidelines and industry standards.
