Senior Quantity Surveyor

STRABAG UK is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our Build Division, supporting the successful delivery of a large-scale build project based near Lincoln. As part of one of Europe’s leading technology groups for construction services, you will play a key role in managing the commercial aspects of projects from pre-construction through to final account, ensuring value, quality, and efficiency at every stage.
Working closely with project teams, clients, and supply chain partners, you will provide strategic commercial leadership, manage risk and cost control, and help drive the financial success of projects ranging in scale and complexity. Responsibilities
- Encourage and develop a culture of commercial awareness within the team.
- Ensure the site team adheres to group procedures and governance.
- Manage the successful onboarding of new junior staff members.
- Manage the development of personal plans, establishment of objectives/targets for all direct reports.
- Identify necessary and appropriate training needs for direct reports.
- Development, motivation, and performance management of junior staff, providing coaching and mentoring where appropriate.
- Delegate appropriate work to junior staff while maintaining accountability.
- Participate in the Project Kick-Off meeting and input into the production and maintenance of the Project Execution Plan.
- Prepare internal commercial reporting and contribute to monthly project reviews and other required reports.
- Prepare valuations/applications for payment with full supporting documentation in accordance with the contract.
- Prepare cost reports for the client with contractually compliant supporting documentation.
- Prepare and manage subcontract and material procurement schedules.
- Prepare and issue sub-contract and consultant appointments in line with the requirements of the programme and procurement schedule.
- Liaise with the Design Manager and Project Manager regarding design aspects of the project, providing advice on cost impacts and value engineering.
- Administer subcontractor/supplier accounts, including preparation of detailed requisitions, monitoring and authorisation of payments, and agreement of final accounts.
- Undertake contract administration, including change management, issue of contractual notices, and communication in accordance with the contract, maintaining associated registers.
- Identify commercial risks, opportunities, value engineering, and change.
- Challenge and manage cost control and cost mitigation.
- Ensure correct site records are maintained.
- Implement a WBS structure to satisfy client and contract requirements.
- Ensure regular risk and opportunity workshops take place within the project team and contribute to a real-time Risk and Opportunity Schedule, including specific mitigation strategies.
- Prepare, negotiate, and agree on change events, extension of time claims, final accounts, etc.
- Measure quantities in accordance with standard methods of measurement as required.
- Ensure appropriate client management is initiated and maintained.
- Identify and advise on insurance-related issues, including prompt notification of potential claims and ensuring all insurance-related contractual requirements are implemented and managed.
- Maximise cash position, including WIP control, cash flow production, and improvement plans.
- Monitor and manage the out-turn cost and value on the project in real time, ensuring a detailed forecast is maintained and reported monthly.
- Input into the production of the margin improvement plan on the project and manage and maintain it in real time.
- Ensure the timely procurement of PCG, bonds, and warranties as required by the contract.
- Manage subcontractor and supplier disputes.
- Input and assist in the management of client disputes.
- Assist in work-winning duties as required, including technical writing for PQQ responses.
- Undertake any other work as required by your line manager.
Qualifications
- Registered with RICS / ICES and working towards Chartership.
- Degree-qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
- Experience working as a Senior or Quantity Surveyor within the UK construction industry.
- Commercially astute with excellent knowledge of standard forms of contract and standard methods of measurement.
- Strong knowledge of construction contracts, particularly JCT forms.
- Computer literate with strong skills in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Experience working with a Design and Build Building Contractor.
- Good communication skills, including presentations, negotiation, and persuasion.
- Familiarity with programming techniques, project controls, risk analysis, contract administration, procurement, cost, and claims.
