About the role

We are currently looking for a Production Underwriting Specialist to join our Select Casualty business unit, the newest profit center in our Great American Risk Solutions Division. This individual will have responsibility for risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability per the divisional goals. This position will be based in our Cincinnati, OH headquarters.

To support this, employees in this role are expected to be on-site four days a week (Tuesday-Thursday required), with the flexibility to work one day remotely, Monday or Friday. Remote candidates with the right experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Has responsibility for risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability per divisional objectives.
  • Uses independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
  • Maintains a high level of customer service.
  • Analyzes coverage and limit requests and decides what terms to offer.
  • Prices business in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Assesses risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiates appropriate loss prevention actions.
  • Orders and screens miscellaneous reports needed in the rating and underwriting processes, such as Motor Vehicle reports, loss history reports, credit checks, outside inspections, loss control, etc.
  • Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.
  • Visits agents, brokers, and producers in order to retain existing accounts, build and maintain business relationships, and develop new opportunities in support of divisional objectives.
  • Interprets, explains, and markets products and services.
  • Administers, applies, and may update underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
  • Provides technical advice to lower level associates and other functional areas.
  • May have responsibility for performance and coaching of staff and may have a participatory role in decisions regarding talent selection, development, and performance management for direct reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • Generally, 3-10+ years of commercial underwriting experience or equivalent work experience
  • Excess and Surplus Lines experience is a plus
  • Must have strong communication skills to build and leverage excellent customer relationships and to successfully market products and services
  • Must have strong hands-on experience with various computer systems including rating systems, MS Word and Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Completion of or progression towards Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation is a plus
  • Ability to travel to visit with brokers

Pay

Salary Range: $70,000.00 - $115,000.00

Compensation varies by role, level, and location and is influenced by skills, experience, and business needs.
