Senior Product Designer, Growth (Temporary)
About the role
The New York Times is looking for a temporary Senior Product Designer to support the Growth mission to create first-in-class web and app experiences that drive our digital subscription business forward. The Growth mission at The New York Times is accelerating our digital subscription business to secure The New York Times's position as the most successful journalistic institution of its kind. Product Designers within Growth design experiences that identify, engage, and convert our most qualified audiences into new subscribers and retain them.
You will drive subscription growth by applying your visual design expertise to promote the value and breadth of The Times's offerings. You will refine and advance growth design patterns for both web and mobile apps, focusing on optimizing the subscription acquisition journey. This role is ideal for a designer interested in the subscription funnel and its challenges and opportunities, who enjoys identifying hypotheses, creating solutions that balance user and business needs, and seeing the direct impact of their work.
This is a temporary, hybrid role based in our New York City office.
Responsibilities
- Support high-level product strategy, ensuring we're asking the right questions and solving for distinct needs.
- Work with engineers and product teams to ensure the design quality and consistency of shipped flows and interactions.
- Create necessary documentation (e.g., user journeys, wireframes, frameworks) to lead conversations and help make decisions.
- Contribute to team rituals, nurture the design team, and mentor junior designers to strengthen the design function.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Requirements
- A portfolio of work that showcases your design process along with finished design work.
- 5+ years of experience designing digital web or app products.
- Experience designing complex user journeys, specifically involving subscription models, paywalls, or e-commerce funnels.
- Proficient in design tools such as Figma.
- Proficient in LLM tooling such as Claude, Cursor, Gemini Canvas, or FigmaMake.
- Experience facilitating alignment through workshopping, brainstorms, and cross-functional collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing and conceptualizing large solutions that drive operational efficiency and align with user and business goals.
- Experience explaining design decisions and impact.
- Experience writing copy for user interfaces that guides users and creating assets that follow established strategies to enhance that messaging.
- Deepened experience designing for multi-variant testing.
Pay
The hourly rate of base pay for this role is $110 - $140 USD.
