About the role

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain. The Electrical Products and Services Team is AWS's Data Center Engineering global engineering team, responsible for the design and continuous innovation for products used within our rapidly expanding data center footprint. As an engineer at Amazon, you are responsible for achieving world class uptime for our customers, driving continuous advancements and improvements with our designs, and communicating technical direction to Senior Leadership. You will design, innovate, and improve the products our customers rely on.

As a product engineer at Amazon, you will be working with other internal groups as well as external groups including engineering service providers, manufacturers, vendors, inspectors, third party testing labs and contractors. Key job responsibilities

  • Work with internal partner teams to solicit customer input and define design requirements for product design
  • Lead new product design, development and qualification of critical electrical power distribution equipment for AWS datacenters with primary focus on MV switchgear and transformers as well as connecting dependencies with LV switchgear and power distribution
  • Develop Capex and Opex spending budgets taking into account development costs with vendors, prototyping needs, testing and specialized tooling requirements
  • Work with global suppliers and manufacturers to specify appropriate electrical equipment and components, ensuring tier 2-3 supply chain resiliency
  • Ensure compliance with UL, CSA, IEC and federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes across different countries through appropriate levels of testing
  • Validate design through prototype, pre-production and first-of-kind builds, conducting DFx and value engineering analysis through each step and updating design and documentation
  • Work with field engineering and commissioning teams to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical products
  • Ability to provide support for manufacturing activities for the new products on concurrent projects in multiple geographical locations
  • Be a leader within the product development team as well as within internal and external teams that support the data center

Basic qualifications

  • 6+ years of data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Knowledge of critical data center mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Experience developing solutions and executing plans on complex projects
  • Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities
  • Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities

Preferred qualifications

  • Professional Engineering or Architectural License
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents
