About the Role

The Senior Principal Riser Engineer is tasked with solving unique and complex problems that broadly impact the business. They must proactively identify and solve the most complex problems affecting the management and direction of the business. As a specialist in riser engineering, this role offers a broad base of knowledge about the engineering function and impacts the direction and resource allocation of programs and projects within the discipline. The role requires conceptual and innovative thinking to develop creative solutions to riser challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Perform conceptual FEED, studies, and detailed design engineering, analysis, and calculations on complex and demanding engineering tasks.
  • Apply knowledge and skills to complete varied assignments, preparing clear and accurate detailed design calculations, analyses, and reports.
  • Prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines and stay within budgets.
  • Communicate and explain information clearly in engineering activities, focusing on health and safety policies and procedures.
  • When acting as Lead Engineer:
    • Direct small or medium mechanical engineering teams, leading discipline engineering design within planned schedules and budgets.
    • Plan, organize, and direct all aspects of discipline execution, including scope, deliverables, schedule, and manpower resources.
    • Ensure interfaces and deliverables are clearly identified and maintain responsibility for progress and productivity.
    • Act as project representative for the discipline during meetings with project teams, customers, and relevant agencies.
    • Identify and address concerns related to project scope, specifications, and inter-discipline requirements.
    • Raise change notifications and provide supporting documentation for scope changes.
    • Support variation orders and interface with other departments for design inputs.
    • Maintain close coordination with other engineering disciplines, planning, fabrication, and project management teams.
    • Document substantive communications and assist in preparing estimates for bid proposals.
    • Prepare discipline engineering design basis, philosophies, and technical specifications.
    • Participate in project review meetings, vendor meetings, and offshore site surveys.
    • Provide technical direction and review for designers producing products related to instrumentation and controls engineering.
    • Assist procurement personnel in procuring discipline equipment, materials, and services.
    • Update weight reports based on vendor information and check engineering performed by others within the discipline.
    • Review vendor and subcontractor submittals for compliance with project specifications.
    • Perform design verification through single-discipline checks and inter-discipline checks (IDC).
    • Provide technical support for fabrication queries, including defect and rectification requirements.
    • Assist in preparing progress reports, including actual, planning, and forecasting.
    • Check final subcontractor and vendor data manuals for completeness and approval.
    • Participate in internal, customer, and third-party technical audits.
    • Assist project engineering managers with responses to customer and agency reviews.
    • Capture lessons learned and enter them into the MDR's Lessons Learned system.
    • Act as a resource for less experienced colleagues, guiding them on procedures, standards, and tools.
    • Develop an awareness of costs related to own work and the discipline.
    • Build and check riser analysis models for:
      • Fatigue Analysis
      • Strength Analysis
      • Installation Analysis
      • Clashing Analysis
    • Perform and check platform design calculations and analysis, including:
      • Wall thickness design
      • Component design
      • Configuration design
    • Participate in riser design reviews and approval of in-house and third-party drawings.
    • When acting as Lead Engineer:
      • Act as the project-based discipline point of contact in communications and meetings with customers.
      • Assist the Discipline Manager in preparing annual forecasts and manpower planning.
      • Prepare bids and the project’s discipline budget and execution plan.
      • Identify project staffing requirements and plan, organize, and assign tasks to team members.
      • Ensure tasks are completed within budget and alert the project team of any scope deviations.
      • Assist the Discipline Manager in the performance evaluation of team members.

Requirements

  • 20+ years of experience in oil and gas, preferably in offshore facilities.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering (Master’s preferred).
  • Strong working knowledge of design techniques and analysis methods.
  • Very good working knowledge of riser engineering processes and tools.
  • Understanding of API, DNV, ISO, ASME, and other standards applicable to riser engineering.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, especially in deepwater riser technology.
  • Preferably a Registered Engineer in Training (EIT) or member of a professional engineering society.
