About the Role

The Senior Principal Engineer is responsible for devising, planning, and implementing engineering strategies for JetBlue, as well as implementing systems architecture that impact the critical technical directions of the organization. This role is pivotal and highly strategic, centered on high-risk and operationally impactful undertakings. As JetBlue develops its future state architectures and platforms, this role will be a primary strategic contributor for Technology Vision & Strategy and will evaluate opportunities for revenue impacts through systems availability, performance, and operational support.

Responsibilities

  • Provide meaningful impacts to revenue and customer experience through the technical development of staff and systems architecture.
  • Offer thought leadership and collaboration into the broader JetBlue organization through empirical analysis.
  • Define problems autonomously and proactly own complex features and distributed designs.
  • Present complex distributed designs across the organization, ensuring alignment with systems architecture strategies.
  • Develop designs and technical roadmaps that influence long-term strategic implementations across teams.
  • Explore customer experiences to obsessively find opportunities for seamless technology interactions.
  • Drive a technology normalization strategy, addressing technology drift across the broader technology organization.
  • Develop, design, implement, and operationally support large-scale digital and cloud-native experiences using mainstream cloud providers.
  • Design, write, and implement platform automation for continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment (CD), as well as production synthetic transactions.
  • Provide input and guidance on development and architecture decisions, acting as a key mentor to other engineers.
  • Evaluate new technologies with a customer-first approach to determine solution viability.
  • Analyze requirements and solution architecture, providing task-specific estimates.
  • Mentor engineers on coding practices and design decisions.
  • Participate in code reviews to ensure high quality and consistent coding practices.
  • Engage in scrum team ceremonies, including sprint planning and backlog grooming, following agile methodology.
  • Collaborate closely with global product development and IT teams, including Product Management, Architecture, DevOps, Quality Assurance (QA), and Infrastructure teams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline; OR demonstrated capability to perform job responsibilities with a combination of a High School Diploma/GED and at least four (4) years of relevant work experience.
  • Six (6) years of software engineering experience, building highly scaled and distributed systems architecture.
  • Six (6) years of professional full-stack development using mainstream development stacks such as NodeJS, Java, and Angular.
  • Demonstrated technical skills through a live work sample during the hiring process.
  • Deep subject matter expertise in modern software architecture, microservices, micro-frontends, serverless applications, and frameworks.
  • Subject matter expertise with CI/CD pipelines and tools like Jenkins and SonarQube, including experience refining development practices using GitOps.
  • Subject matter expert in developing software applications in at least one major cloud platform: Azure, GCP, or AWS.
  • Available for light to moderate overnight travel (less than 10%).
  • Possession of valid travel documents and ability to travel in and out of the United States.
  • Able to work flexible hours and be available for emergency response on short notice.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the country where the position is located.
  • Awareness of security best practices in Cloud Security and client vulnerability management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Eight (8) years of experience in agile practices within Scrum teams.
  • Eight (8) or more years of software engineering experience, building highly scaled and distributed systems architecture.
  • Eight (8) years of professional full-stack development using mainstream development stacks such as NodeJS, Java, and Angular.
  • Knowledge of modern software architecture, microservices, micro-frontends, serverless applications, and frameworks.
  • Experience with mainstream Content Management System (CMS) implementations and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) such as Magnolia, Adobe, and Fastly.
  • Knowledge of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
  • Experience with Yarn, Gradle, WebPack, and CSS.

  • Potential need to work flexible hours and be available to respond on short notice.
  • Able to maintain a professional appearance.
  • When working or traveling on JetBlue flights, and if time permits, assist with light cleaning of the aircraft.

Pay

The base pay range for this position is between $134,600.00 and $210,100.00 per year. Base pay is one component of JetBlue’s total compensation package, which may also include performance bonuses, restricted stock units, healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with company match, crewmember stock purchase plan, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, free space-available travel on JetBlue, and more.
