Senior Principal, EMP/TEMPEST Engineer (Onsite)

Location: Richardson, TX (Onsite)

About the role

Collins Aerospace, a leader in technologically advanced, intelligent solutions for the aerospace and defense industry, is seeking an experienced EMP–TEMPEST Electrical Engineer with a current CTP-II certification or someone actively pursuing CTP-II certification. This position will support programs within the Richardson IS portfolio as well as other Collins Aerospace business units, including Mission Systems and Avionics Systems. The engineer will provide design-support activities related to EMP and TEMPEST disciplines for products and subsystems of moderate to high complexity, and support programs during bid phases, requirements allocation, and system design and development.

Responsibilities

• Travel for EMP or TEMPEST testing, business meetings, and customer engagements.
• Serve as the focal point for EMP and TEMPEST activities on assigned projects, including:
  • Contribute to engineering program pursuits and bid estimates.
  • Support the acquisition process by developing EMP-compliant designs to achieve compliance with existing and emerging EMP tests associated with MIL-STD-188-125-1, MIL-STD-188-125-2, MIL-STD-2169, MIL-STD-3023, and MIL-STD-464.
  • Perform requirements capture activities (review, parse, and translate TEMPEST, EMP, EMC/EMI, and power input requirements).
• Support documentation needs for each assigned project, including:
  • Preparation and review of TEMPEST control plans, test procedures, and test reports (if already a CTP).
  • Preparation and review of EMP environments for Nuclear Survivability Design Analysis Reports, test procedures, and test reports.
  • Contribute to development of Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) Integration and Analysis Reports (E3IAR).
• Generate repeatable test procedures and physical test setups using appropriate test equipment and data-recording methods based on applicable military and commercial standards.
• Develop and review TEMPEST test reports.
• Provide support to programs during the design and development phases.
• Coordinate and schedule in-house and external test activities.
• Validate laboratory test setups and methods to ensure compliance with test procedures and applicable standards.
• Interface with project engineers to support program activities.
• Operate and learn the system under test and gain proficiency with systems being evaluated.
• Conduct and lead day-to-day EMP and TEMPEST testing activities, working independently across multiple projects and tasks.
• Generate and review EMP and TEMPEST test data.
• Apply electromagnetic principles to perform EMP and TEMPEST analysis and/or testing to verify radiated and conducted electromagnetic compliance of aircraft or other systems/subsystems.
• Apply electromagnetic principles to document and solve complex problems.
• Assist project engineers in gathering, setting up, and collecting data for ad-hoc evaluations outside formal testing events.
• Provide mentoring to junior EMP and TEMPEST engineers.
• Willingness to be on call for security-related matters and assume custodial responsibilities for the lab, as needed.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship only (dual citizenship not permitted).
• Active and transferable Top Secret U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date.
• Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience.
• Active TEMPEST testing experience within the last 2 years and experience submitting TEMPEST reports for approval.
• Minimum of 8 years EMI/EMC experience with MIL-STD-461 D/E/F/G (or DO-160) plus 2 years TEMPEST testing experience.
• Experience developing EMI qualification test procedures and reports and supporting EMI qualification testing in a laboratory.
• Expert user of oscilloscopes, signal generators, and other TEMPEST test equipment.

Qualifications (Preferred)

• Valid CTP-II certification, with at least 1 year of remaining validity from the date of application.
• Minimum 10 years experience with MIL-STD-188-125-1/2 standards.
• Minimum 5–7 years experience with MIL-STD-2169 standard.
• Minimum 3 years experience with MIL-STD-3023 standard.
• Experience with NSTISSAM TEMPEST/1-92 and CNSSAM TEMPEST/01-02.
• Experience testing communication, display, and advanced computer systems for EMP and TEMPEST compliance.
• Ability to conduct hands-on troubleshooting using engineering lab equipment (oscilloscopes, signal generators, etc.).
• Knowledge of digital signal processing.
• Excellent communication skills, including writing technical documentation and presenting to customers and mid-level managers.
• Self-directed and capable of meeting cost, schedule, and performance objectives with minimal oversight.
• Detail-oriented and a strong team player.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $132,400 - $251,600 USD.
