The Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game (TCG) team is growing! The Creative team is seeking an experienced Senior/Principal Art Director to help bring the world of Disney Lorcana to life across cards, packaging, organized play materials, playmats, retail experiences, marketing campaigns, and other consumer-facing products. As a seasoned creative contributor, you will work under the guidance of the Set Lead Art Director to elevate and execute the visual direction for Ravensburger’s TCG products. This role brings senior level artistic judgment, strong licensed-IP stewardship, and deep illustration commissioning experience to help translate set goals into world class illustrations. The Senior Art Director guides our roster of freelance artists with clarity and confidence, anticipates creative risks, understands the impact of cross-functional decisions, and is prepared to support or temporarily step in for the Set Lead when needed. This role balances creative ambition, licensor expectations, production realities, and player/collector appeal to help deliver with exceptional quality, accuracy, and consistency.
Responsibilities
- Translate card concepts, narrative intent, gameplay needs, and Disney Lorcana visual standards into clear, inspiring art direction for commissioned illustrations; review and refine art descriptions to ensure briefs are focused, production-ready, and easy for artists to act on, while leveraging strong visual storytelling judgment to connect character, setting, action, mood, and gameplay intent within a single illustration brief.
- Commission and guide high volumes of illustration from brief through final delivery, providing timely, constructive, clear, respectful, and actionable feedback that keeps artwork accurate, aligned with narrative needs, and on schedule; utilize visual notes, references, and overlays as communication tools to clarify direction, solve production challenges, and support artist success while prioritizing direction and feedback over hands-on art creation.
- Collaborate effectively with Set Leads, Narrative, Production, Brand, Art Coordination, and external artists across cultures, time zones, and working styles to align creative goals with production realities, balance card-level execution with set-level visual goals, and support a broader trading card game experience through a collaborative, cross-functional approach.
- Maintain brand consistency, IP standards, and visual storytelling quality across commissioned artwork, demonstrating a strong understanding of illustration fundamentals including composition, staging, color, lighting, perspective, character performance, and visual clarity; steward Disney storytelling with care, consistency, and imagination while managing multiple commissions, shifting priorities, and tight production timelines with strong organization and attention to detail.
- Support the discovery, review, and thoughtful onboarding of freelance illustration talent, fostering a broad, globally relevant, and inclusive artist pool while demonstrating curiosity about collectible trading card games, tabletop games, fantasy illustration, and the evolving global illustration market; help define set-level direction, identify visual patterns across sets, improve creative workflows, mentor creative partners and team members, make sound judgment calls, and shape long-term standards for the Disney Lorcana visual language.
Requirements
- Relevant experience in production art direction, illustration commissioning, art buying, tabletop or collectible trading card game development, publishing, animation, games, entertainment licensing, or other visual storytelling fields.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex illustration commissions, ensuring high-quality creative execution while balancing artistic vision, production requirements, timelines, and stakeholder needs.
- Experience providing set-level creative direction and oversight, helping establish and maintain a cohesive visual identity, narrative consistency, and artistic quality across products, programs, or content portfolios.
- Proven success managing and improving production workflows, including driving collaboration across creative and cross-functional teams, optimizing processes, and ensuring efficient delivery of creative assets.
- Demonstrated depth of specialization, strategic creative judgment, and mentorship capabilities, with a track record of guiding creative teams, influencing organizational best practices, and shaping long-term visual standards and creative direction.
