$125k–$350k/yrFull-time

About the role

Strategic Mission Critical (SMC) is seeking a Senior Level Power Studies Engineer to direct and execute electrical power studies—including short circuit, coordination, arc flash, reliability, and Neher-McGrath thermal ampacity studies—for mission-critical projects. Typical projects include greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise clients, conceptual designs, feasibility studies, and evaluations of existing facilities. The role involves independent execution of studies, leadership of a small team, and close collaboration with internal design leads, clients, contractors, and equipment manufacturers. The ideal candidate will also contribute to growing SMC’s power studies expertise through training, design standards, and quality control practices.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and complete power studies for mission-critical buildings and campuses, covering campus-level medium-voltage distribution, highly redundant power systems (distributed and block redundant topologies), on-site generation, UPS backup, and house power distribution.
  • Coordinate with electrical design leads, contractors, and equipment manufacturers to gather all necessary data for system modeling.
  • Review client standards, design criteria, applicable codes, and best practices to ensure power system designs meet all requirements.
  • Apply knowledge of local and national construction codes and project specifications to electrical power studies.
  • Utilize tools such as SKM, ETAP, Reliasoft BlockSim, and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams) to complete studies.
  • Meet project deadlines, including working additional hours as needed to deliver major milestones.
  • Travel to project sites as required (typically less than 5% of the time).
  • Communicate clearly in both written and verbal forms with team members and clients.
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers and designers, coordinating tasks across multiple teams to ensure timely project delivery.
  • Maintain strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Requirements

  • 4-year degree in electrical engineering or architectural engineering with an electrical focus preferred; 2-year degrees and EET degrees with relevant work experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in facility electrical design, with proficiency in SKM for power system studies.
  • Experience with short circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies for large industrial and commercial buildings (1000+ buses); mission-critical design experience (including multiple scenarios, alternate power paths, and complex topologies) is a strong plus.
  • Experience performing and reviewing Neher-McGrath underground thermal studies is strongly preferred.
  • Experience across the full construction lifecycle—from schematic design through construction administration, including submittal reviews, shop drawings, existing condition surveys, site observations, and punch lists—is a plus.
  • Experience leading small teams and interfacing with clients is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with construction management tools such as Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud is a plus.
  • Knowledge of controls and monitoring systems for mechanical and electrical systems is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; unlicensed candidates with appropriate experience are welcome to apply.

Benefits

  • 36-hour standard work week with hybrid working arrangement.
  • 13 paid holidays.
  • 100% coverage of medical, health, and dental insurance premiums for full-time employees; subsidized premiums for spouse and family coverage.
  • Employer-sponsored life and long-term disability insurance.
  • 401(k) plan with annual safe harbor contribution.
  • Reimbursement of professional licensing costs.

Pay

Base compensation: $125,000–$350,000 (actual compensation varies based on education, experience, skills, and location).
