Senior Power Engineer - Transmission and Distribution

About the role

This is a senior level electrical engineering position located onsite in Coolidge, AZ focusing on power transmission and distribution. This role supports the San Carlos Irrigation Project (SCIP) Power Program which purchases power from the Western Area Power Administration and the Southwest Public Power Agency and resells it directly to customers on the San Carlos Indian Reservation and areas near the outside the reservation boundary. This includes the electricity to approximately 13,000 residential, commercial, industrial, and government customers in Pinal County and parts of Pima, Maricopa, Graham, and Gila counties. Its service area spans approximately 2,400 square miles and serves agricultural and rural customers in the Lone Butte industrial park area and large residential populations in the San Carlos, Gila River, and Oracle areas.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Installation and maintenance of distribution equipment, including feeder replacement and cable replacement.
  • Reviewing various distribution calculations such as cable pulling, voltage drop, and pole loading calculations.
  • Applying strong knowledge of NESC standards and utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.
  • Participating in the development of project schedules, scopes, budgets, resource forecasting, and construction planning.
  • Managing change orders and overseeing quality control reviews of project deliverables.
  • Overseeing or performing construction administration activities and leading field inspections for overhead and underground electric facilities.
  • Preparing and presenting technical reports for clients and industry publications.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with existing clients, customers, and contractors.
  • Leading the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to achieve financial performance targets.
  • Mentoring less experienced engineers and designers.
  • Ensuring compliance with federal and site safety policies.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Clear communication of design details, specifications, and operating requirements to team members.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local building codes and safety laws.
  • Advanced math skills and the ability to understand abstract principles behind math and physics.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision and manage multi-disciplinary technical teams.
  • Experience with industry design standards for power utilities and Federal Design standards of associated infrastructure.
  • At least 10 years of experience with Power Utilities.
  • Experience with one or more DWP programs is highly desirable.
  • Sensitivity to multi-cultural stakeholder needs.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or similar from an ABET Accredited institution.
  • Evidence of obtaining professional engineering licensure (P.E.) in any state.
  • At least 3 years’ experience directing work of a multi-disciplinary technical team.
