About the role

Blue Ridge Community College seeks a full-time Senior Plumber to perform skilled maintenance and repair on mechanical and electrical systems. The role supports campus operations by installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems and related equipment, while contributing to a mission-driven, inclusive workplace recognized by the Chronicle of Higher Education as a Great College to Work For.

Responsibilities

  • Install, alter, maintain, and repair plumbing apparatuses such as sinks, toilets, showers, faucets, mixing valves, recirculation pumps, water heaters, automatic faucets, and automatic flush valves.
  • Maintain fire suppression systems, including required inspections.
  • Repair and alter piping systems; clear drain lines using appropriate equipment.
  • Maintain, install, and repair appliances including washing machines, dryers, dishwashing machines, and water fountains.
  • Assist other trades as needed and perform general maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Support event setups, office moves, snow removal, and other departmental tasks.
  • Respond to occasional after-hours callbacks for emergencies.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience with commercial and/or institutional plumbing, steam equipment, fire sprinklers, related appliances, welding, soldering, plumbing codes, and safety standards.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and specialized trade equipment.
  • Competent understanding of building systems, mechanical equipment, and facility infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance practices and procedures related to plumbing.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and specifications.
  • Basic knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and work order tracking, or ability to learn quickly.
  • Working knowledge across multiple trades disciplines.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, climbing, and working in elevated spaces.
  • Valid driver’s license; full background check and driving record check required.

Qualifications

  • Master level certificate in plumbing, or ability to obtain.
  • Backflow Certification.
  • Gas Fitters Certification.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., with occasional after-hours callbacks for emergencies.
