Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed MP cost estimates for central utility plants, process utility systems, electrical distribution, and controls.
  • Develop estimates from conceptual through 100% construction documents.
  • Create assemblies and system-level pricing for complex utility systems.
  • Build cost models for plant equipment, piping systems, and controls.
  • Familiarize yourself with skid-mounted systems, prefabrication, and modular utility plants.
  • Mentor and teach estimators, junior estimators, and interns as needed.
  • Solicit, analyze, and level subcontractor and vendor bids for mechanical, plumbing, control, and equipment suppliers.
  • Conduct scope reviews and clarification meetings with subcontractors.
  • Identify scope gaps, overlaps, and risk areas.
  • Support buyout and final subcontractor selection.
  • Develop and maintain MP budgets and cost plans.
  • Support GMP development and validation.
  • Prepare escalation, contingency, and risk allowances.
  • Track estimate-to-budget alignment.
  • Provide cost impact analysis for scope, design, or schedule changes.
  • Suggest and evaluate Value Management options to maintain budget and / or schedule.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers, process engineers, owners, and facility engineers during design reviews focused on constructability, cost, and phasing.
  • Evaluate alternative equipment, materials, and system designs.
  • Identify and manage cost, schedule, and constructability risks related to utility plants and process systems.
  • Support risk registers, develop mitigation strategies, and contingency planning.
  • Document and report detailed estimate backups and narratives.
  • Prepare bid comparisons, scope sheets, and cost summaries.
  • Support executive and owner presentations.
  • Maintain estimating databases and historical cost records.

Requirements

  • S. in Mechanical engineering or related field, and/or an equivalent combination of 15+ years of technical training and construction experience.
  • Experience in the local construction market and a keen understanding of costs and pricing.
  • Knowledge of construction contracts.
  • Excellent organizational, supervisory, and decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in construction estimating and related functions.
  • Knowledge of commissioning and start-up requirements.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, high level of ownership, organizational skills, controlled sense of urgency, and the ability to manage multiple, competing priorities.
  • Advanced management or technical training preferred.
  • Demonstrate integrity, respect, and excellence in their work.
  • Fluency in Excel.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC and hydronic systems, steam, chilled water, and condenser water plants, process piping and utility systems.
  • Experience estimating design-build and GMP projects.
  • Proficiency with estimating and takeoff software (e.g., Sage, OST, Bluebeam, Excel, or similar).
  • Able to read and interpret P&IDs / One-lines, mechanical and electrical plans, specifications and equipment schedules, and commissioning and start-up requirements.

The expected salary range for this role is $160,000 to $245,000 per year, with actual compensation varying based on experience, skills, and qualifications.
