About the Division

The Building & Safety Division ensures the safety, health, and welfare of residents, workers, and visitors by enforcing the West Hollywood Building Code, which includes building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and municipal codes. The Division also enforces California State accessibility regulations, energy conservation, and CalGreen standards. Services include permitting, plan check, and inspections, delivered through public and virtual counters, web resources, conference calls, and field visits.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical expert leading comprehensive reviews of complex architectural, structural, and building plans to ensure compliance with California Building Codes and City standards.
  • Guide developers, architects, engineers, and contractors through the permitting process to achieve safe, compliant developments.
  • Support Community Service programs that serve stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with City departments, LAC Fire and Health Departments, utility providers, and community partners to optimize approval workflows while maintaining safety standards.
  • Manage multiple high-priority projects, meet deadlines, and build professional partnerships to drive West Hollywood’s growth.
  • Demonstrate self-leadership in maintaining code knowledge and working with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Civil or Structural Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in plan review, plan checking, and project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of California Building Codes, development laws, and City policies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships with developers, design professionals, and community stakeholders.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with City departments, external agencies, utility companies, and community members.
  • Project management skills to handle multiple complex projects while meeting critical deadlines.

Qualifications

  • ICBO/ICC Certified Plans Examiner – must obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • International Code Council (ICC) certification as a CalGreen Plans Examiner – must obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer or Licensed Architect in the State of California (preferred).
  • California Access Specialist (CASp) certification (desirable).
