Senior Performance Marketing Manager (Remote, San Antonio)
About the role
Blacksmith Agency runs PPC and SEO for clients across multifamily, B2B and technical verticals. As Senior Performance Marketing Manager you lead that department. The PPC strategist and the SEO strategist report to you and they are the specialists in their channels. Right now nobody owns this function, which is the whole reason this seat is open. This is a management seat, not a senior individual contributor one. You will not be building campaigns, and on technical SEO your strategist will know more than you do. That is the arrangement, not a gap. You carry channel strategy and where budget goes as accounts scale. The strategists carry the execution of it, and you carry whether the department delivers.
Responsibilities
- Set and uphold the quality bar, development, reviews, and performance expectations for the PPC and SEO strategists, including defining audit standards, pre‑delivery checks, and reporting guidelines.
- Ensure honest client results across the entire function, including auditing attribution and GA4 accuracy.
- Diagnose at‑risk accounts, direct the appropriate strategist to fix issues, and join the client call for escalation handling.
- Develop and own channel strategy and budget allocation as accounts scale.
- Define what the sales team can credibly promise before a deal is closed.
- Create the hiring plan for the department and conduct first‑round interviews for new team members within roughly a quarter.
Requirements
- Experience managing strategists or specialists, including conducting reviews, overseeing development, and making performance‑management decisions.
- 7+ years of experience across paid media and SEO (ownership of a single channel does not satisfy this requirement).
- Deep knowledge of Google Ads, GA4, Search Console, Meta, and Microsoft Ads sufficient to evaluate work quality beyond surface‑level reporting.
- Demonstrated success turning around an account, with clear before/after metrics and a solid explanation of why the change worked.
- Comfortable acting as the client‑facing owner when an account underperforms, taking the call yourself rather than delegating to a strategist.
- Agency experience managing multiple accounts simultaneously.
- Do not apply if you have never had direct reports, never performed performance‑management, have only ever run a single channel, or have only in‑house brand experience.
- Do not apply if your primary goal is to continue building campaigns yourself; this role is focused on leadership, not hands‑on execution.
Process
Three conversations, then a decision: a 30‑minute screen with the recruiter, a first round with the founder (the seat’s direct report), and a final interview. No take‑home project and no panel interview.
