Senior Patient Access Specialist

About the role
The Senior Patient Access Specialist is responsible for performing admitting duties for all patients receiving services at Ensemble Health Partners. Additional duties include training, scheduling, and other senior-level responsibilities while meeting the mission of Ensemble Health Partners and all regulatory compliance requirements.
This position pays between $18.65 - $19.90/hr based on experience and offers bonus incentives, paid certifications, tuition reimbursement, and comprehensive benefits.
Responsibilities
- Assign accurate MRNs, complete medical necessity or compliance checks, provide proper patient instructions, collect insurance information, and process physician orders using an overlay tool.
- Provide excellent customer service as measured by Press Ganey and serve as the SMART for the department.
- Operate the telephone switchboard to relay incoming, outgoing, and inter-office calls as applicable.
- Utilize quality auditing and reporting systems to ensure accounts are corrected, including accounts for other employees, departments, and facilities.
- Develop training materials and programs for new hires and provide continuing education to associates in all areas of the revenue cycle.
- Develop staff schedules within the patient access department.
- Provide on-call support for the department, including after-hours guidance and covering staffing issues during unscheduled times.
- Collect point of service payments in emergency, outpatient, and inpatient situations, including past due balances and offering payment plan options.
- Conduct audits of accounts to ensure forms are completed accurately and timely, meeting audit standards, and provide statistical data to Patient Access Leadership.
- Explain general consent for treatment forms, obtain necessary signatures, and distribute patient education documents.
- Review eligibility responses in the insurance verification system, select applicable insurance plan codes, and enter benefit data to support POS collections and billing processes.
- Pre-register patient accounts prior to visits, including inbound and outbound calls to obtain demographic and insurance information.
- Accurately screen medical necessity using Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) software and inform Medicare patients of possible non-payment.
- Distribute and document designated forms and pamphlets.
- Adhere to Ensemble Health Partners policies and provide excellent customer service in all interactions.
Requirements
- 1 to 3 years of relevant job experience.
- Associate degree or equivalent experience.
- Understanding of revenue cycle including admission, billing, payments, and denials.
- Comprehensive knowledge of patient insurance processes for obtaining authorizations and benefits verification.
- Knowledge of health insurance requirements and medical terminology or CPT/procedure codes.
