Senior Optical Engineer

About the role

Leidos Defense Space Business is seeking a Senior Optical Engineer to support the Emerging Space Systems Division. This position involves developing optical payload systems for the Space Force, including missions such as Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR), Space Control, and Space-Based Sensing. Responsibilities include system conceptualization, optical design, performance analysis, payload construction, testing, and integration.

Responsibilities

• System conceptualization and design
• Optical design and performance analysis
• Payload construction and testing
• Integration of optical systems into flight instruments
• Design and development of optical systems using Zemax
• Aberration theory and its impact on system performance
• Optical tolerancing, athermalization analysis, and lens manufacturing methods
• Stray light control, STOP analysis, and laboratory testing and evaluation
• Experience in infrared and visible lens design
• Prototype and production development, including testing and demonstrations
• Working knowledge of MS Office applications, MATLAB, and SolidWorks

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree with 12+ years of relevant experience or Master of Science with 10+ years of relevant experience
• Infrared and Visible lens design using Zemax experience required
• Knowledge of electro-optical systems design, specification, development, manufacture, and testing
• Experience in prototype and production development, including testing and demonstrations
• Working knowledge of MS Office applications, MATLAB, and SolidWorks
• Effective communication, coordination, and customer engagement skills
• Minimum of an active SECRET security clearance with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance

Qualifications

• Basic qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree with 12+ years of relevant experience or a Master of Science with 10+ years of relevant experience.
• Preferred qualifications include experience in stray light performance analysis using FREDBandpass and AR coating development, radiometric modeling, manufacturing and assembly process knowledge, and reflective optical system design.

Skills

• Conceptualizing optical designs and overseeing their mechanical implementation into qualified flight instruments
• Demonstrated proficiency in mechanical modeling for proposal and concept development
• Strong understanding of radiometric requirements, optical performance specifications, and payload hardware development
• Understanding of aberration theory and its impact on system performance
• Proficiency in optical tolerancing, athermalization analysis, and lens manufacturing methods and drawing standards
• Experience in stray light control, Structural Thermal Optical Performance (STOP) analysis, and laboratory testing and evaluation
• Knowledge of infrared lens design and reflective optical system design

Benefits

Pay Range: $131,300.00 - $237,350.00
