SENIOR NETWORK ENGINEER

About the role

The Navy Exchange (NEXCOM) operates retail stores, food services, hotels, auto shops and other services on Navy bases worldwide. We employ more than 14,000 civilian associates in diverse roles and welcome applicants without a military background. This position provides overall responsibility for the integration of the enterprise-wide network, including evaluation, planning, design, installation, administration, support, and troubleshooting of WAN/LAN hardware, configurations, software, and services.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a top-level technical contributor and lead with advanced knowledge of wide area and local area networking, Cisco operating systems, wired and wireless technologies, and related hardware/software.
• Lead research and development of new technologies to optimize and maintain NEXCOM’s Data Center, local and wide area networks.
• Evaluate vendor products and perform cost-analysis to determine solutions that best meet organizational needs.
• Design, test, and integrate new network equipment (routers, firewalls, switches, DSU/CSU, DSL modems, etc.) with current WAN/LAN infrastructure.
• Install, configure, troubleshoot, and modify network and telecommunications hardware/software in accordance with DISA Network Security Technical Implementation Guides.
• Mentor team members on network infrastructure technology and provide escalation, testing, and support for network equipment, telecom circuits, and local servers in the field and at NEXCOM.
• Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation for wide-area network support.
• Develop, update, and maintain documentation and drawings related to the Data Center and local/wide area networks.
• Troubleshoot and resolve network and user problems in a timely manner while maintaining the security and integrity of all network hardware and software.
• Provide oral and written reports to management and perform capacity planning, optimization, and analysis for new and existing networks.
• Ensure rigorous application of Information Security/Information Assurance policies, principles, and practices in the delivery of systems, applications, and services.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship required.
• Must be eligible for and obtain a Secret Clearance within 6 months of appointment; failure to obtain will result in termination.
• Position designated IT-1 (Critical – Sensitive) per SECNAV M-5510.30; requires a favorable Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI).

Qualifications

• General Experience: 3 years of administrative or technical work demonstrating ability to perform technical, managerial, or analytical work involving management information systems; OR one year of academic study above high school may substitute for 9 months of experience (up to a 4-year bachelor’s degree in business/information systems or computer science may substitute for 3 years of general experience).
• Specialized Experience: 5 years total experience including:
  • Experience in a Cisco Enterprise Class Support Group with full-spectrum Cisco network infrastructure configuration and maintenance.
  • Installation and optimization of Cisco network devices through traffic management, QoS, and resource tuning in an enterprise Data Center with 100+ remote sites across diverse geographic locations.
  • Configuration of Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Virtual Private Networking (VPN) in low-bandwidth, multi-site environments.
  • Implementation of Class of Service (CoS) policies.
  • Experience with network security requirements and compliance based on regulations such as PCI, HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, or DISA Security Guidelines.

Certifications

• Information Assurance (IA) Certification (required within 6 months of appointment; NEXCOM provides paid training/testing): One of the following:
  • Security+
  • GIAC Security Essentials Certification (GSEC)
  • Security Certified Network Professional (SCNP)
  • Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP)
  • Higher-level certifications: CISA, CISSP, GSE, SCNA
• Technical Certification (required within 6 months of appointment): Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA).
• Certifications must be valid (not expired) as defined by the issuing policy.
• Candidates without required certifications may be placed into the role but must obtain them within 6 months; failure to do so will result in termination.
