Job Description We are hiring a Senior MuleSoft Developer for one of our FinTech clients. This role is fully remote - candidates should be based in EST/CST timezones - and this is a long-term (multi-year) project contracted on a 6-month rolling basis. Hourly rates in the range of $70-80/h w2 or $75-90/h C2C This person will own the full integration lifecycle — from low-level design through to production delivery and ongoing support. This is not a ticket-execution role. The successful candidate will produce design artefacts, make implementation decisions, and be accountable for the quality and operability of what they ship. The role sits within the Integration Engineering function and works closely with Solution Architecture, Data Engineering, and Platform SRE. You will be expected to bring both technical depth and design thinking to your work. Key Responsibilities Low-Level Design Produce low-level design artefacts for MuleSoft integrations: sequence diagrams, flow specifications, error handling matrices, API contracts (RAML / OAS), and DataWeave transformation specs. Translate business and functional requirements into integration patterns, selecting the appropriate combination of system, process, and experience API layers. Define watermarking, retry, and idempotency strategies for polling and event-driven integration patterns. Participate in architecture reviews; identify and raise design risks before implementation begins. Contribute to and enforce integration development standards, including error handling conventions, logging structure, correlation ID strategy, and naming conventions. Development and Delivery Design, build, test, and deploy MuleSoft integrations across the full Anypoint Platform stack: CloudHub 2.0, API Manager, Runtime Manager, Anypoint MQ, and Anypoint Exchange. Write expert-level DataWeave 2.x transformations covering complex JSON, XML, CSV, and flat-file mappings, including XPath and XSL/T for legacy formats. Implement production-grade error handling: technical retry policies, dead-letter queue patterns, circuit breakers, error logging, and structured incident escalation (e.g. ServiceNow). Write MUnit test suites with meaningful coverage of error paths, transformation edge cases, and connector behaviour — not just happy-path flows. Testing is part of delivery, not an afterthought. Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for MuleSoft using Maven, Jenkins (or equivalent), and Git branching strategies aligned to the team's release model. Configure Anypoint Monitoring for production flows: flow-level metrics, distributed tracing (OTEL), custom metrics, log search, and alert routing. Platform and Operations Configure and maintain Anypoint Platform infrastructure: VPCs, dedicated load balancers, shared/private CloudHub spaces, API policies (OAuth, JWT, rate limiting, IP allowlisting), and SLA tiers. Manage API proxies, client registrations, and access control via API Manager; maintain Client ID and Secret hygiene across all registered applications. Support production integrations on a rotational on-call basis; lead root cause analysis for failures and own remediation to completion. Onboard integrations into Anypoint Exchange as reusable, discoverable assets consistent with a C4E operating model. Collaboration and Standards Work with Solution Architecture to shape integration design decisions; contribute to Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) where implementation choices carry architectural significance. Review integration designs and code produced by peers; provide specific, constructive feedback. Provide technical guidance to less experienced developers; support knowledge transfer and uplift across the team. Produce and maintain integration documentation: flow specifications, runbooks, operational guides, and API catalogues. Essential Skills and Experience 5+ years of hands-on MuleSoft development in enterprise production environments, with demonstrable end-to-end ownership of integrations from design to live support. Proven ability to produce low-level design artefacts — not just implement against designs produced by others. Expert-level DataWeave 2.x: complex transformations, recursive functions, type coercion, error handling within transformations, and performance-aware mapping. Deep, hands-on experience with Anypoint Platform: CloudHub 1.0 and 2.0, API Manager, Runtime Manager, Anypoint MQ, Anypoint Exchange, and Anypoint Monitoring. Strong command of integration patterns: watermarking, idempotent consumers, scatter-gather, content-based routing, saga/orchestration, and event-driven messaging. Experience designing and implementing production error handling: retry policies, DLQ patterns, circuit breakers, structured error logging, and operational escalation flows. Hands-on MUnit experience — you write tests as part of delivery, not retrospectively. CI/CD experience for MuleSoft: Maven, Jenkins or equivalent, Git branching models, and automated CloudHub deployment. CloudHub platform configuration: VPC design, dedicated load balancers, shared and private spaces, API policies, and SLA tier management. Working knowledge of Java: sufficient to debug connector behavior, extend SDK components, and understand runtime threading implications for flow design. Solid SQL and relational database fundamentals; experience with Azure SQL or equivalent. Experience with at least one major SaaS integration: Salesforce, Workday, ServiceNow, Coupa, or equivalent. Strong understanding of SOA, REST, HTTP, JSON, XML, and API-led connectivity principles. Strongly Preferred MuleSoft Certified Developer Level 1 or Level 2. MuleSoft Certified Integration Architect is a significant differentiator. Experience with event streaming platforms: Kafka, Redpanda, or Anypoint MQ at scale — including topic design, consumer group management, and dead-letter topic handling. Experience with cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS, Snowflake) and polling-based consumption patterns including watermark state management. Experience with Anypoint Monitoring Telemetry Exporter and OpenTelemetry-based trace forwarding to external observability platforms (Datadog, Splunk, or equivalent). Experience in financial services, insurance, reinsurance, or other regulated environments where auditability and error traceability are non-negotiable requirements. Familiarity with Azure infrastructure: Azure SQL, Azure Service Bus, Azure API Management, or Azure Functions as integration adjacents. Experience in a C4E or Centre of Excellence model: contributing to shared standards, reusable assets, and developer enablement. What Good Looks Like The strongest candidates for this role will demonstrate the following: You can produce a sequence diagram, watermark strategy, error matrix, and test plan for a polling integration before writing the first line of DataWeave as standard practice You know the difference between a flow that works in a demo and a flow that is observable, restartable, and safe for an on-call engineer to manage at 2am. Your flows are the latter. You treat MUnit coverage as a professional standard. Your test suites exercise the error paths that actually cause production incidents, not just the paths that make demos look good. You have informed opinions about DataWeave patterns, error handling strategies, and platform configuration choices — and you can articulate the trade-offs, not just the preference. You are comfortable working across design and delivery in the same sprint. You do not hand off designs for others to implement; you own the work end-to-end. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and demonstrable experience. MuleSoft certification preferred (Developer Level 1/2 or Integration Architect). 8+ years overall professional software engineering experience, with at least 5 years specialising in MuleSoft.
