About the role
This role is ideal for underwriters with a strong Non-QM background who enjoy complex credit analysis, thoughtful decision-making, and working with experienced mortgage professionals in a collaborative environment.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite Non-QM loan products including DSCR, bank statement, asset utilization, and alternative income programs
- Analyze borrower creditworthiness, income, assets, liabilities, and overall risk profiles
- Evaluate appraisals, collateral risk, marketability, and property characteristics
- Ensure loans meet investor guidelines, internal credit standards, and regulatory requirements
- Issue clear and well-supported underwriting decisions and conditions
- Communicate effectively with processors, loan officers, and management regarding loan structure and credit concerns
- Provide scenario guidance and product support to internal teams
- Maintain quality, accuracy, and service level expectations
- Stay current on investor guidelines, overlays, and regulatory changes
- Assist with training and mentoring less experienced underwriting staff as needed
Requirements
- 3+ years of recent mortgage underwriting experience
- Demonstrated experience underwriting Non-QM products, including DSCR + bank statement programs
- Agency underwriting experience, including Conventional, FHA, VA, and USDA loans preferred
- Experience evaluating complex self-employed borrower income
- Strong appraisal review and collateral analysis experience
- Encompass experience required
- Solid understanding of federal and state mortgage regulations, including TILA, RESPA, and Fair Lending requirements
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Professional demeanor aligned with a high-touch client and referral partner experience
- Ability to perform successfully in an in-office, hybrid, or remote environment with clear accountability and performance expectations
