About the role

This position is ideal if you are an excellent problem solver with strong decision-making and communication skills, detail-oriented, highly organized, and possess a deep understanding of mortgage products and the mortgage industry. The role is full-time (40 hours/week) at our Directors Row location in Fort Wayne, IN, with a standard schedule of Mon-Fri: 8:00am-5:00pm. Some flexibility in daily scheduling may be available if needed.

As a Mortgage Underwriter, you will review, evaluate, and decide on mortgage loan files using internal Underwriting Standards and general FHLMC/FHLB guidelines to assess applicant creditworthiness.

Responsibilities

  • Review loan files for sufficient documentation to make informed decisions based on product descriptions and underwriting guidelines. Request additional information from processors or originators if needed.
  • Conduct thorough analysis of loan packages to ensure compliance with company and/or investor requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with loan originators, processors, and closing staff to deliver clear underwriting conditions and final loan decisions.
  • Provide timely updates to management on high-risk loan scenarios or exception requests. Prepare and sign conditional and final approval letters.
  • Analyze borrower credit, income, assets, property, and potential risk factors to determine loan quality and repayment ability.
  • Review appraisals for consistency, comparables, and final value support, including any underwriting considerations based on property condition.
  • Review title insurance commitments for each new loan file. Submit denied loans for dual review.
  • Serve as a trusted resource to the mortgage team by providing guidance on loan scenarios, documentation, and policy exceptions, including compensating factors for decisions.
  • Comply with all company policies, procedures, and applicable laws, including the Bank Secrecy Act, Patriot Act, and Office of Foreign Assets Control.

Requirements

  • Five or more years of related experience, including preparatory roles.
  • High school diploma or GED required.

Skills

  • Strong understanding of mortgage loan interest rates, commitment/rate lock/relock procedures, and member loan products/guidelines.
  • Familiarity with loan origination software systems.
  • Ability to perform sedentary work with occasional lifting up to 10 lbs.
  • Capability to operate office equipment (telephone, copier, fax, calculator) and work on a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed and maintain reliable attendance.
  • Must be able to work independently or as part of a team, follow written and oral instructions, and communicate clearly.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, deadlines, and diverse personalities professionally and calmly.
  • Highest level of discretion in handling confidential matters.

Schedule

ADA Requirements

  • Primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion.
  • Capable of climbing/descending stairs in emergencies.
  • Must be able to work in a climate-controlled indoor environment with minimal noise.
