Senior ML/AI Engineer - Agentic Developer Experience
This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to the office in Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford, Mountain View, or Sunnyvale a minimum of 3 days per week. Candidates in the Seattle, Washington area may be considered fully remote.

The Role
We are seeking a Senior Engineer with a strong engineering background, experience with diverse developer tools and technologies, and a passion for developer productivity. As an individual contributor (IC) leader, you will balance business needs, user priorities, and team growth while fostering technical development among engineers.
The Team
As part of the AV Developer Productivity Org, you will create and maintain a robust, reliable, and cohesive inner-loop development experience for AV developers at GM. This includes optimizing code quality and production speed through internally developed tools, vendor tools, and integrations. Your impact will vary by situation, but you will identify high-impact opportunities with minimal guidance.
Responsibilities
- Identify engineering pain points and propose, design, and implement scalable, maintainable solutions.
- Synthesize company, organizational, and customer context to establish priorities and influence the team’s technical roadmap.
- Evaluate new tools and technologies through proof-of-concept (PoC) projects.
- Ship improvements to AV development toolchains and services that directly enhance engineering productivity and core company metrics.
- Drive software engineering best practices and create tooling to encourage adoption.
- Steer the team’s engineering culture, balancing impact delivery with technical debt management.
- Mentor and grow engineers while setting high accountability standards.
- Execute impactful work both individually and through the team.
- Set boundaries to prioritize requests aligned with the team’s vision.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production systems at scale in the cloud.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Understanding of AI Engineering principles and concepts.
- Experience designing highly scalable, reliable, and maintainable services.
- Proficiency in Go or equivalent languages for production-scale systems.
- Strong knowledge of Unix/Linux, SSH, and networking fundamentals.
- Attention to detail and a drive to improve processes and systems.
- Ability to lead and influence stakeholders, both internal and external.
- Principled reasoning, research, documentation, and communication skills to defend proposals and provide/receive critical feedback.
- Ability to make and articulate trade-offs under competing priorities while maintaining focus on shipping.
- Passion for mentoring junior engineers and enhancing team efficiency.
- Enthusiasm for self-driving technology and its global impact.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing, building, and operating production systems in GCP.
- Familiarity with gRPC, Docker, and Kubernetes.
- Contributions to open-source projects.
Pay
The salary range for this role is $178,420 to $230,500. The actual base salary will vary based on factors relevant to the position. An incentive pay program offers bonuses based on company, job level, and individual performance.

Schedule
This hybrid role requires reporting to a designated office location at least 3 days per week. Travel may be required up to 25% of the time. Relocation benefits may be available for eligible candidates.
