About the role

We are seeking an engineer to develop advanced modeling and simulation tools for evaluating the performance of strategic missile systems and hypersonic vehicles. In this role, you will join a talented team in the Flight Systems Performance group within the Force Projection Sector, working on challenges for government sponsors such as the US Navy and US Air Force. Your work will include developing 3 Degree of Freedom (DoF) and 6DoF simulations, interfacing with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) test environments, performing trade studies, trajectory optimization, and supporting flight test and evaluation activities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and use modeling and simulation tools to conduct trade studies, performance assessments, and conceptual design studies of strategic missile systems and hypersonic vehicles.
  • Participate in missile test and evaluation activities, including test operations and pre/post-flight evaluations.
  • Lead and contribute to analysis efforts.
  • Collaborate with cross-discipline teams to advise government and contractor partners on engineering challenges and design trades.
  • Produce reports and presentations to communicate results to team members and government partners.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 5 or more years of experience in an engineering discipline such as modeling and simulation, aerodynamics, flight dynamics, navigation, guidance and control, propulsion, or missile test and evaluation.
  • Experience working with and developing modeling and simulation tools.
  • Familiarity with flight vehicle physics and dynamics.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Experience developing 3 Degree of Freedom (DoF) and/or 6DoF simulations.
  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally to attend meetings or tests at other government and contractor sites.
  • Ability to work in closed area facilities.
  • Active Secret level security clearance and ability to ultimately obtain a Top Secret level security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required.

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 10 or more years of experience in an engineering discipline such as modeling and simulation, aerodynamics, flight dynamics, navigation, guidance and control, propulsion, or missile test and evaluation.
  • Experience using optimal control software packages such as OTIS, POST, or GPOPS.
  • Experience generating autocode in Simulink.
  • Experience with Software in the Loop (SWIL) and/or Hardware in the Loop (HWIL) simulations.
  • Experience programming in Simulink and/or C/C++.
  • Design or evaluation experience with missiles and related subsystems.
  • Current Top Secret Clearance.

Pay

Minimum Rate: $100,000 Annually
Maximum Rate: $245,000 Annually

Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training, and skill level. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy, including sign-on bonuses, relocation benefits, locality allowance, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
