Senior Member of Technical Staff, Developer Experience
About the role
The Senior Member Of Technical Staff, Developer Experience at Harper is responsible for driving the development and maintenance of tools and processes that enhance the efficiency and reliability of the engineering team. This role focuses on cutting CI build times, ensuring dev-environment reliability, detecting and quarantining flaky tests, integrating evaluation stacks into CI pipelines, and automating pre-merge gate checks.
Responsibilities
- Cut CI build times to under 5 minutes at the 95th percentile through techniques such as monorepo tuning, incremental builds, and remote caching.
- Ensure local, staging, and CI environments are in parity, with boot times under 10 minutes and reproducible, containerized setups.
- Develop and enforce automated tests to detect and quarantine flaky tests, preventing their silent retry.
- Integrate evaluation frameworks into CI pipelines to ensure pre-merge gates, offline experiments, and production trace monitoring are in place.
- Automate pre-flight checks for pull requests to provide a comprehensive overview of services affected, tests run, missing tests, migrations, and critical-path warnings.
- Build and maintain the internal developer platform, including service templates, scaffold generators, document indexers, and internal CLI commands.
Requirements
Essential qualifications include:
- 3-6 years of experience building software, particularly in developer-platform, CI/CD, build infrastructure, and dev-environment areas.
- Experience with at least one monorepo build system and integration of an evaluation framework into a real CI pipeline.
- Daily interaction with AI and a strong understanding of rules files and repo-level agent guidance.
- Strong written communication skills.
Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
- Devcontainers or similar cloud dev environments.
- Custom lint-rule authoring.
- Open-source developer-tools contributions.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will bring a track record of improving CI times, a deep understanding of monorepo build systems, and hands-on experience with evaluation frameworks. They should be able to communicate effectively and contribute to the development of tools that significantly impact the speed and reliability of the engineering process.
