Senior Medical Science Liaison – Cell Therapy (Midwestern US)

About the role

This Senior Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role serves as the local medical voice of AstraZeneca in cell therapy and myeloma, building a local medical strategy to improve patient care and outcomes in the Midwestern US territory. The MSL will apply deep scientific, clinical, and therapeutic expertise to support AstraZeneca’s cell therapy pipeline and advance the company’s commitment to transforming the CAR-T experience and expanding patient access.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain scientific relationships with hematology/cell therapy thought leaders, investigators, and appropriate HCPs across academic and community centers within the assigned territory.
• Engage in scientific exchanges with treating hematologists/oncologists, cell therapy physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, apheresis and cell processing staff, and nursing teams.
• Respond to unsolicited requests for scientific and product information in accordance with company policy.
• Establish oneself as a trusted scientific advisor and expert to both internal stakeholders and external HCPs, including serving as an expert in response to scientific questions.
• Educate cell therapy provider teams on disease state, CAR-T mechanism of action, multiple myeloma therapeutic landscape, safety and clinical management, manufacturing processes, and data pertaining to infusion center and patient management, guided by compliance considerations.
• Support the implementation of cell therapy infusions in infusion centers by timely support of healthcare providers navigating the complexity of cell therapy and diverse stakeholder groups.
• Gather and synthesize site-level insights from site physician leadership and multiple HCP segments within the region and communicate with medical leadership and relevant internal partners.
• Identify data and educational gaps through discussion with External Scientific Experts (ESE) to inform medical affairs strategy and address unmet patient needs.
• Identify opportunities to partner with HCPs on disease state initiatives, collaborative research projects, and investigator-sponsored research (ISR) aligned with areas of scientific interest.
• Collaborate with key stakeholders across Medical Affairs, Commercial, and Research and Development (R&D).
• Represent Medical Affairs at relevant congresses and scientific meetings through scientific exchange with ESEs, medical booth coverage, and sharing scientific and competitive insights.

Minimum Qualifications

• Advanced scientific degree required (e.g., PharmD, MD/DO, PhD, PA, or NP) in a relevant health science or clinical discipline.
• 5+ years of experience in hematology/oncology with at least 2 years in a field medical or equivalent scientific engagement role, preferably in cell therapy and/or multiple myeloma.
• Ability to express ideas clearly in written documentation, one-on-one conversations, and small group dialogues, with the ability to distill complexity into key messages and scientific narratives for internal and external stakeholders.
• Experience supporting the development and/or launch of a new pharmaceutical product in the U.S.
• Experience operating in a matrixed environment with cross-functional partners in Medical Affairs, Commercial, and R&D.
• Ability to travel 40–60% domestically by car, train, and plane.

Preferred Qualifications

• Doctorate degree (e.g., MD or equivalent, PharmD, or PhD) with oncology/hematology specialization preferred.
• Direct knowledge, experience, and expertise in hematology/oncology cell therapy.
• Experience working with headquarters and implementing HQ plans in the field.
• Collaborative matrix management skills within diverse groups to achieve shared goals.
• A track record of building and maintaining deep, ongoing connections to medical practice and healthcare delivery.
• Working knowledge of FDA and GMP requirements, industry rules, and regulations governing cell therapy quality manufacturing and field-based medical roles.

The territory includes Chicago and Kansas City. You should live within this territory.
