Senior Mechanical Engineer – Structural/Thermal Analysis and Design (Onsite)
U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance. The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued DoD Secret security clearance is required; active and existing clearance is preferred after day one.

Collins Aerospace, a leader in technologically advanced, intelligent solutions for the aerospace and defense industry, is seeking a highly motivated Senior Level Mechanical Engineer to join the Strategic Defense Solution (SDS) team. This onsite position in Largo, FL, involves contributing to the analysis, design updates, and documentation of military equipment, working with an integrated product team (IPT) to ensure robust design choices and compliance with program requirements.
Responsibilities
- Communicate technical topics and issues clearly to both technical peers and non-technical team members.
- Conduct and provide constructive feedback during peer reviews; mentor and document knowledge to guide team members.
- Work proactively with an IPT to identify risks and opportunities.
- Coordinate with design teams to ensure compliance with environmental needs (e.g., shock, vibration, crash loading per MIL-STD-810).
- Document analysis results for internal and external customers to support future reference and customer certification.
- Lead investigations into complex, open-ended tasks and identify root causes of issues.
- Create military-compliant designs incorporating custom machined/sheet metal parts and commercial off-the-shelf items.
- Collaborate with designers and drafters to create, modify, and release documentation such as part and assembly drawings.
- Contribute to testing activities to verify product requirements compliance and correlate analyses.
Requirements
- Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree with 3 years of experience.
- Experience with thermal analysis using computational fluid dynamics software (ANSYS Icepak or comparable).
- Experience with modal analysis, internal stress loading, fatigue, margins of safety calculations, and finite element analysis software (ANSYS Mechanical or comparable).
- Knowledge of PLM/PDM software (PTC Windchill) and 3D CAD software (preferably PTC Creo).
Preferred Qualifications
- Active DoD security clearance or Top Secret Clearance.
- Practical skills in designing electronics packaging (enclosures/racks) with strict size, weight, and power (SWaP) criteria and environmental mitigation.
- Experience designing printed circuit boards (PCBs) and supporting non-mechanical duties (e.g., component layout/selection).
- Ability to interpret Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Experience with military standards such as MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-1472.
- Knowledge of Jira-driven hardware development and designing devices for extreme environments.

Pay
The salary range for this role is $86,800 – $165,200 USD. The range is a good-faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers factors such as role, function, responsibilities, work experience, location, education/training, and key skills when extending an offer.
