About the role

The Senior Mechanical Engineer participates in all aspects of day-to-day operations of the Dartmouth College engineering office, providing high-quality engineering services for a wide range of projects. Responsibilities include design reviews, field investigations, existing systems assessment, HVAC and plumbing system design, equipment selection, drafting, code review, calculations, writing HVAC control sequences, construction administration, and continuous improvement of campus Design and Construction Guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Owner’s Engineer (65%): Provides mechanical engineering oversight of consultants’ designs and installations for new construction and renovation projects. Ensures compliance with Dartmouth College design guidelines, energy performance standards, and relevant building codes (ASHRAE, NFPA, IBC, local regulations). Activities include attending project meetings, developing consultant scopes of work, conducting design and submittal reviews, construction observation, commissioning oversight, and project closeout verification.
  • Department Liaison (10%): Acts as liaison between Facilities Operations & Management (FO&M) and campus departments requesting engineering support. Works with FO&M shops on troubleshooting, problem-solving, and implementing solutions for maintenance and operations projects. Provides technical oversight and issues work orders as needed.
  • Engineering Design and Construction Administration (10%): Provides design and construction administration for small mechanical system renovation/renewal projects. Prepares bid documents, including equipment selection, system layout, drafting, and specifications. Conducts shop drawing reviews, attends job meetings, clarifies installation details, reviews as-built documentation, and performs field inspections.
  • Campus Design and Construction Guidelines (5%): Participates in the continuous improvement of campus design and construction guidelines, including high-performance building design standards for designers and contractors.
  • Culture and Employee Belonging (10%): Demonstrates commitment to inclusion and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications. Participates in division-wide initiatives and training, promotes the 7 Principles (Empathy, Fairness, Dependability, Inclusivity, Consideration, Vulnerability, and Respect), and collaborates on DEI-related efforts within the division and College.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or architectural engineering technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ten (10) or more years of mechanical design and drafting experience with an MEP consulting firm, or equivalent.
  • Registered Professional Mechanical Engineer in New Hampshire, or ability to become registered within one (1) year of employment.
  • Minimum of 5 years of mechanical drafting experience using AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with all aspects of HVAC and plumbing design, including load calculations, system sizing, equipment selection, field verification, codes and standards, and controls design.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with energy-efficient HVAC system design and control strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve problems related to mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Detail-oriented self-starter with strong interpersonal, decision-making, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong service orientation and commitment to continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a college or university environment.
  • Knowledge of the International Building Code and working with authorities having jurisdiction.
  • High proficiency with AutoCAD and 3D drafting software such as Revit.
  • Active LEED BD+C AP certification.
