About the role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Raleigh team and provide technical and project leadership across complex building projects. This is an excellent opportunity for a licensed PE who enjoys leading teams and mentoring junior engineers but still wants to remain actively involved in engineering and design. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead mechanical building systems design throughout all phases of projects, working directly with clients to establish design criteria and develop solutions that balance performance, constructability, budget, energy efficiency, and project goals.

Responsibilities
- Lead the design of mechanical/HVAC systems for complex building projects
- Perform and review engineering calculations and equipment selections
- Develop mechanical system concepts based on client requirements, project goals, and budgets
- Evaluate and assess existing mechanical systems
- Develop project specifications and technical documentation
- Perform energy and lifecycle/payback analyses
- Ensure mechanical designs comply with applicable building codes, engineering standards, and project requirements
- Manage mechanical discipline staff, assignments, schedules, and project budgets
- Provide technical leadership and quality assurance throughout project delivery
- Coordinate mechanical systems with architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, and other project disciplines
- Work directly with clients, contractors, consultants, and other project stakeholders
- Perform field investigations and existing-condition assessments
- Review submittals and provide engineering support throughout construction
- Mentor and develop junior engineers and designers
- Prepare project proposals and participate in client presentations
- Maintain current knowledge of mechanical building systems, energy efficiency, codes, technologies, and design practices
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related discipline
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- 8+ years of mechanical engineering experience
- Strong background designing HVAC and mechanical systems for commercial or institutional buildings
- Experience with technically complex projects within science & technology, higher education, life sciences, laboratories, healthcare, or similar markets strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects and mentor junior engineering staff
- Strong hands-on technical design and engineering capabilities
- Experience performing mechanical engineering calculations and equipment selections
- Knowledge of applicable building codes and mechanical engineering standards
- Experience with Revit and/or AutoCAD
- Experience with engineering calculation and equipment selection software
- Strong client-facing, communication, project management, and multidisciplinary coordination skills
Pay
$110,000 - $160,000 per year
