Senior Mechanical Designer

Contract to Hire position based in Orlando, FL.

About the role

The Senior Mechanical Designer is responsible for the conceptualization, design, and development of complex, large-scale industrial machinery and mechanical systems. This role collaborates closely with engineering, manufacturing, and project teams to create detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, and assembly documentation for custom equipment, heavy machinery, automated systems, and industrial production equipment. The position suits an experienced designer who excels in large mechanical assemblies, understands mechanical design principles and manufacturing processes, and can integrate equipment effectively into heavy industrial environments.

Responsibilities

• Conceptualize and design complex, large-scale industrial machinery and mechanical systems for heavy industrial applications.
• Develop detailed 3D models of custom equipment, heavy machinery, automated systems, and industrial production equipment using advanced CAD tools.
• Produce accurate engineering drawings, bills of materials, and assembly documentation to support manufacturing and installation activities.
• Collaborate closely with engineering, manufacturing, and project teams to ensure designs meet technical requirements, cost targets, and project timelines.
• Apply mechanical design principles and manufacturing process knowledge to create robust, manufacturable, and maintainable designs.
• Perform engineering calculations and support finite element analysis (FEA) activities to validate design integrity and performance.
• Support field installations and equipment commissioning by providing design clarification, resolving issues, and implementing design updates when necessary.
• Lead or act as a key contributor on large capital equipment projects, providing design direction and coordinating design activities with cross-functional teams.
• Integrate mechanical designs with industrial automation systems, including conveyors, material handling equipment, robotics, and process machinery, where applicable.
• Ensure designs align with relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements, including ANSI and OSHA guidelines.

Requirements

• Extensive mechanical design experience of 8+ years, with a focus on large mechanical assemblies and complex machinery.
• Strong proficiency in mechanical design and drafting, including the creation of detailed engineering drawings and documentation.
• Advanced 3D modeling capability using CAD software, including SolidWorks.
• Experience using AutoCAD for mechanical design and layout work.
• Demonstrated expertise in designing large machinery and heavy industrial equipment.
• Proven ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, manufacturing, and project teams in a heavy industrial environment.
• Bachelor's degree in engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and performing engineering calculations to validate designs.
• Knowledge of industrial automation systems, including conveyors, material handling equipment, robotics, or process machinery.
• Familiarity with applicable industry standards and regulations, including ANSI and OSHA.
• Experience supporting field installations and equipment commissioning.
• Project leadership or lead designer experience on large capital equipment projects.

Work Environment

This position is based on site in a heavy industrial environment focused on large-scale machinery and industrial production equipment. The Senior Mechanical Designer works closely with engineering, manufacturing, and project teams, using advanced 3D modeling tools such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD to develop and refine designs. The role may involve time on the shop floor or in plant areas to review equipment, support manufacturing, and assist with field installations and commissioning. The environment emphasizes collaboration, safety, and adherence to industry standards while working around large mechanical assemblies and automated systems.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $55.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
