Senior Mechanical Construction Cost Manager / Estimator

Responsibilities

  • Estimating and negotiating change orders throughout the construction lifecycle.
  • Provide estimate and cost planning to include producing and presenting the final cost plan.
  • Review and participate with the design services team and general contractor in the development of cost estimates.
  • Reconcile changes and assist the general contractor to ensure that their data is accurate.
  • Communicate or meet with the general contractor and owner or project manager to gather status information to prepare cost estimate updates.
  • Prepare written comments on contractor submissions, including executive summaries.
  • Cover all sources of cost information including contractor pricing, supplier quotations, subcontractor proposals, and quantity information from design teams.
  • Inform and drive engineering priorities based on cost impact.
  • Work proactively with minimal supervision to resolve commercial and scheduling issues.
  • Manage cost checks and carry out valuations on large-scale construction projects.
  • Complete timely and accurate cost checking, auditing, and valuation processes.
  • Participate effectively in post-contract cost variance and change control processes.
  • Manage cost impact assessments, contingency management, risk tracking, and commitment logs.
  • Prepare funding presentations and coordinate value engineering sessions with stakeholders.
  • Develop cost plans and estimates through all design phases, delivering updated cost plans at key design milestones.
  • Provide commercial input into design optioneering and value engineering exercises.
  • Evaluate the cost impact of design development, scope growth, and structural or civil design changes on mechanical systems and overall project budgets.
  • Utilize estimating and cost management tools including Excel, Bluebeam, PlanSwift, and similar digital quantity takeoff platforms to support cost planning, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Maintain awareness of labor market conditions, workforce availability, and material supply chain factors to identify potential cost and schedule risks.
  • Ensure post-contract cost variances and change control processes are managed effectively.
  • Ensure cost auditing and valuation work is managed effectively and that robust cost validation procedures are maintained.
  • Produce monthly cost reports and executive summaries for client presentation.
  • Ensure final accounts are negotiated and agreed upon in a timely manner.
  • Compile historical cost data and benchmarking records to support future projects and estimating activities.
  • Identify, coach, and mentor talent to help individuals realize their potential and celebrate the success of others.
  • Display excellence in leadership and service delivery in line with the conditions of appointment.
  • Implement and maintain company delivery methodologies, business management systems, and best practices.
  • Lead mechanical cost management activities associated with HVAC systems, cleanroom environments, process piping, utility infrastructure, and process cooling water systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Cost Management, Engineering, or a related construction discipline.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of experience in cost management, quantity surveying, estimating, or project controls within the construction industry.
  • Experience managing mechanical scopes on medium to large-scale construction projects.
  • Experience with HVAC, piping, mechanical utilities, process systems, cleanrooms, advanced manufacturing, mission-critical, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, industrial, or data center projects is highly desirable.
  • RICS accredited or actively working toward accreditation preferred.
  • Experience leading cost management services on projects of medium to high complexity.
  • Construction consultancy experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of construction delivery methods, procurement strategies, value management, and value engineering.
  • Proficiency with estimating and cost management software, including Excel, Bluebeam, and digital quantity takeoff tools.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and client-facing skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced project environment and manage multiple priorities.
